Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has warned Pakistanis against online scammers who impersonate family members and pretend to be sick to trick people into transferring money.
Speaking alongside NCCIA Additional Director Atif Ameer, the minister shared info about astonishing cases in which fraudsters pose as nephews or relatives and ask for money.
Some scammers also claim to be ill to make their requests appear genuine.
Minister said numerous cases of this kind had been reported and urged cybercrime police to launch public awareness campaigns to help people identify and avoid such scams.
He stressed the need to educate the public about these basic fraud tactics, which can be prevented if people verify the identity of anyone requesting money online.
People should confirm the identity of the person making the request, particularly when the caller’s voice is unfamiliar, before transferring any money, he added.
