Sam Wright, a South African woman who went public about a man harassing and intimidating women at the intersection of Main Road and Witkoppen in Fourways, has shared a deeply personal update. She filmed the video straight off an overnight flight, saying it was a message she had been desperate to make since the whole ordeal began.
In the clip, Wright revealed that the man, named Thabo, is no longer on the streets. Activist Curt van Heerden, who is also involved in politics, and his team spent days searching for Thabo before locating him. They quickly established that he is a drug addict and worked to get him placed in a rehabilitation centre.
Community stepped up where the system failed
Wright was candid about the failures that allowed the situation to drag on. She said the ward councillor had been largely unresponsive, and that SAPS had, in her words, "all but just ignored all of this." Thabo had been removed from the streets before and had multiple complaints filed against him, yet those in positions of authority did very little.
It was the community, not official structures, that ultimately made the difference. Wright thanked Van Heerden not only for helping make women safer but also for trying to get Thabo the support he clearly needed. She said:
"My chapter in this is done."
She also added that she would continue to speak out on other issues but that Thabo's story was now his own to write.

"Excellent job for persevering. Hopefully Thabo will grab this opportunity with both hands and get his life back on track before he lands up in jail for his violent behaviour. Your voice has been heard! 👏"

"And sadly he will be back. Very very very few of these addicts come right sadly."
