Shedeur Sanders has hired an NFL agent for the first time, creating new questions about his future with the Cleveland Browns. The move comes as the second-year quarterback remains behind Deshaun Watson and the NFL trade deadline approaches.
Sanders signed with Adie von Gontard, CEO of Young Money APAA Sports, according to reporting on the move. The agency also represents Sanders’ former Colorado teammate, Travis Hunter.
The decision has fueled speculation that Sanders could seek a move elsewhere, but hiring an agent does not confirm a trade request. Cleveland has not announced plans to trade the quarterback, leaving his next move uncertain.
Sanders hires an agent after beginning his NFL career without one
Sanders entered the NFL without an agent, handling his draft process and the early stages of his professional career independently. His decision to hire von Gontard marks a change in how he manages his football business.
The agreement gives Sanders professional representation as he navigates his second NFL season. An agent can advise on career decisions, contract matters and communications with teams, although the appointment alone does not establish a specific transaction plan.
The timing has attracted attention because Cleveland’s quarterback situation remains crowded. Sanders has spent much of the season behind Watson, and his limited regular-season opportunities have raised questions about how quickly he can develop into a larger role.
Trade speculation grows ahead of the NFL deadline
The NFL’s trade deadline is scheduled for Nov. 10, 2026, at 4 p.m. ET. That approaching cutoff gives teams a limited window to make roster changes before the season’s remainder.
The timing of Sanders’ agent hire has encouraged speculation that his representatives could explore potential opportunities. However, no publicly confirmed trade request from Sanders has established that he wants to leave Cleveland.
The situation remains fluid, and the agent appointment alone does not establish that Cleveland or another NFL team has begun trade negotiations. Any potential deal would require concrete developments beyond speculation about Sanders’ future.
Cleveland selected Sanders in the fifth round of the 2025 draft
The Browns selected Sanders with the 144th overall pick in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft. His selection came after a college career at Colorado that established him as a productive passer and a prominent NFL prospect.
Sanders had hoped to be selected earlier, but his draft position did not prevent him from earning opportunities in Cleveland. The organization added him to a quarterback group that included experienced players and other developing prospects.
His rookie season offered an initial look at the transition from college football to the NFL. Sanders appeared in 8 games in 2025, making 7 starts and throwing for 1,400 yards, 7 touchdowns and 10 interceptions, according to his team statistics. NBC Sports reported on Sanders’ decision to hire an agent, a development that has drawn attention to his position in Cleveland.
Watson’s starting role limits Sanders’ opportunities
Cleveland entered the 2026 season with Watson as its starting quarterback. The decision left Sanders competing for opportunities behind a veteran, making regular playing time difficult to secure unless the coaching staff changed its plans or circumstances required another option.
The Browns have also carried other quarterbacks, including Dillon Gabriel and Taylen Green. Managing several players at the same position creates decisions about development, game-day availability and how the team allocates practice repetitions.
Sanders’ limited workload matters because quarterbacks generally benefit from live-game experience. Still, a backup role does not automatically mean a player has fallen out of favor, and teams often develop young quarterbacks through practice while waiting for the right opportunity.
Marvin Harrison Jr.’s trade offers a comparison
Marvin Harrison Jr. provides a recent example of a player changing his representation before a trade. The receiver hired agents after previously representing himself, and Arizona subsequently traded him to Houston in October 2026.
That sequence has encouraged comparisons with Sanders, but it does not establish that the Browns quarterback is pursuing the same outcome. Hiring an agent can also provide assistance with contract matters and longer-term career planning.
Any Sanders trade would depend on Cleveland’s willingness to move him and another team’s interest. Harrison’s experience does not establish that a similar deal is underway.
Sanders’ agent can help manage his long-term career
An agent’s responsibilities extend beyond negotiating contracts. Representation can help a player evaluate career options, communicate with teams and manage professional obligations, including endorsement opportunities and long-term planning.
Sanders’ rookie contract also shapes the immediate context. As a player drafted in 2025, he remains in the early stages of his NFL career, making development and opportunities to gain experience important considerations.
Still, no public statement from Sanders or von Gontard has established that the hiring was specifically intended to facilitate a trade. Without direct confirmation, the purpose of the move remains unknown, and its implications should be approached with caution.
Cleveland must weigh development against roster flexibility
The Browns must balance Sanders’ long-term potential with their immediate quarterback needs. Keeping him would allow the team to continue developing a young player already familiar with its system, while a trade could potentially bring back assets if another club showed meaningful interest.
Moving a quarterback also carries risks. Cleveland would need to consider its depth chart, injury protection and the value of retaining a developing player who could become more useful with additional experience.
For now, there is no confirmed agreement sending Sanders elsewhere. The upcoming deadline may intensify speculation, but the Browns’ actual intentions will become clearer only through an official transaction, a direct statement or reliable reporting about concrete negotiations.
Sanders’ NFL future remains an open question
Sanders’ agent hire is a confirmed development, while the trade theories surrounding it remain unproven. His role behind Watson, Cleveland’s crowded quarterback room and the approaching deadline help explain why the decision has attracted attention.
The Browns selected Sanders to add a young quarterback to their roster, and his rookie statistics show he has already received meaningful starting experience. Whether Cleveland continues that development or considers another option depends on factors that have not been publicly settled.
For Sanders, professional representation creates a new resource as he works to establish his NFL future. Until the player, his agent, or the Browns confirm a trade-related development, the most accurate description is that his hiring has sparked speculation rather than signaled a completed move.
