When you think of Ohio State football legends, few are more synonymous with the brand than former head coach Woody Hayes.
Coach Hayes led the Buckeyes from 1951 to 1978, compiling a total of 276 wins in his tenure, including five of Ohio State's nine national championships. While many remember Hayes' fiery passion for the game of football, he was also known for his connection to the Columbus community.
During his 28-year career as the head coach of Ohio State, the five-time national title winner kept his home phone number listed in the Columbus phone book because he believed he should be available to everyone. It is hard to imagine a coach doing that in today's world, but it speaks to how special the community was to Coach Hayes.
Woody passed away in 1987, but his legacy has lived on to this very day. His accomplishments on the field will always be remembered, but his impact goes far beyond wins and losses. Thanks to Ryan Vesler, Buckeye fans can still connect with the legendary coach on game days and beyond by calling that same phone number. Take a look at the feature on ESPN's College GameDay:
Hayes' old number, 614-488-1910, remains active today and is available to all Buckeye fans. Call it yourself to hear a famous pre-game speech from one of the men who made Ohio State what it is today.
It is special to think about how, almost 50 years after his last game on the sidelines, Hayes' unmistakable voice can still remind fans what Ohio State football is all about.
