NASCAR’s O’Reilly Series Has a Money Problem: Are Talented Drivers Losing Seats to Better-Funded Rivals?

NASCAR’s O’Reilly Auto Parts Series is supposed to be a proving ground. Drivers arrive with ambitions of reaching the Cup Series, teams look for the next star, and every Saturday offers another opportunity to prove who belongs at the next level.

But what happens when proving yourself behind the wheel is only half the job?

Denny Hamlin believes the financial side of the series has become a serious concern. Speaking on his Actions Detrimental podcast recently, the Joe Gibbs Racing driver estimated that 80% of drivers in NASCAR’s Saturday races pay team owners some amount of money to secure their seats. He also warned that the series is financially fragile, with drivers regularly moving between teams depending on the funding they can bring.

That estimate is Hamlin’s, not an independently verified count of every driver’s financial arrangement, but it has put an uncomfortable question back in the spotlight: Is NASCAR giving the best opportunities to its best young drivers, or is it going to whoever can help pay the bills?

A closer look at sponsorship arrangements and results from the 2026 season shows why the question deserves attention.

Racing talent is no longer the only thing a driver needs

Running a competitive NASCAR program costs millions of dollars. Teams must pay for equipment, engines, engineering, transport, mechanics and countless other expenses before a driver even takes the green flag.

So, Sponsorship is not an optional extra. It’s part of the business model that allows teams to compete.

The problem starts when a driver’s ability to attract funding becomes a decisive factor in whether they get a seat at all.

Hamlin described team owners weighing competing financial offers, with drivers potentially moving elsewhere if another candidate can bring more money to the table. He argued that the series should be built around putting its best drivers in competitive cars, rather than making funding such a significant part of the selection process.

It is a difficult problem to solve. Smaller organizations cannot simply ignore sponsorship offers when their budgets depend on them. Even established teams need commercial partners to maintain their operations.

But a system that rewards financial backing too heavily can create a vicious circle. A driver without substantial funding may never get the equipment needed to demonstrate their potential. And Another driver can continue racing because a sponsor is willing to support the program, even when the results are disappointing.

That does not necessarily mean the funded driver lacks talent. But it does mean the opportunity to prove that talent is not distributed equally.

The results show why funding alone cannot tell the whole story

Statistics published by Pit by Numbers on October 16, using data through Charlotte’s 29th race of the season, provide several revealing comparisons between drivers, their sponsorship backgrounds and their results.

The most useful examples are not simply the drivers with family businesses or well-known sponsors. They are the cases in which performance helps explain what a team is getting in return.

Consider Brent Crews, the rookie at Joe Gibbs Racing. The figures compiled by Pit by Numbers put his average finish at 12.4, the best among the organization’s four O’Reilly Series drivers in its comparison.

Crews has progressed through the racing ranks without the kind of prominent family-company sponsorship like in some other drivers’ backgrounds. He has also received backing and development opportunities, so it would be inaccurate to describe him as racing without financial support.

But his results still illustrate an important point: a young driver can justify an opportunity through performance, even when their financial background is not the headline.

Parker Retzlaff offers another example. According to Pit by Numbers, he averaged 12.9 in the No.99 Viking Motorsports car through Charlotte, compared with a 23.6 average finish for Matt DiBenedetto in the same entry during 2025. Retzlaff also recorded 12 top-10 finishes and four top-five results in the supplied data.

A year-to-year comparison cannot account for every difference between seasons, but the improvement shows why teams should judge their investments by what happens on track as well as by the money coming in.

Then there is Taylor Gray, who has family connections to the business world but has also delivered results. The supplied figures credit him with a Kansas victory, 14 top-10 finishes and 191 laps led through Charlotte.

These exemples do undermine the simplistic idea that sponsorship and speed are mutually exclusive. Drivers can bring money and perform well. But the real issue is whether teams are making decisions based on the complete picture, rather than treating funding as a substitute for competitiveness.

The No.48 comparison raises a difficult question

The contrast between Nick Sanchez’s 2025 season and Patrick Staropoli’s 2026 campaign in Big Machine Racing’s No.48 car is another example.

Sanchez won at Atlanta in 2025, led 86 laps and recorded 12 top-10 finishes in the supplied data. Staropoli, who joined the team for 2026, had yet to record a top-10 finish through the Charlotte race in the comparison.

Staropoli’s car has carried SYFOVRE sponsorship. However, there is no verified evidence in the supplied material establishing that he personally paid for his seat or identifying the value of the sponsorship arrangement.

A sponsor’s presence on a car does not prove that a driver bought the opportunity, and two seasons of results cannot isolate every factor affecting performance.

Still, the comparison raises a legitimate question about how NASCAR teams evaluate drivers. When a car’s results change significantly from one season to the next, how much weight should be given to the driver, the equipment, the team structure and the commercial arrangement that supports the entry?

There is no easy answer. But the question is worth asking when teams have limited seats and talented drivers are competing for opportunities.

NASCAR’s development ladder risks becoming a financial filter

Hamlin’s criticism is particularly relevant because the O’Reilly Series is an important step toward the Cup Series. It gives young drivers a chance to gain experience and show that they can handle the demands of higher-level racing.

Yet if financial backing determines who gets access to competitive equipment, the development system risks filtering talent before it can be properly evaluated.

The consequences extend beyond individual drivers. Fans want to see genuine competition, teams want to identify future winners, and sponsors want their investment to produce value. A system that makes it difficult to separate financial opportunity from racing merit can undermine all three goals.

This is not an argument for removing sponsorship from NASCAR. That would be unrealistic. It is an argument for recognizing that the business model can influence sporting decisions, sometimes in ways that are difficult to measure.

The financial pressure is not unique to NASCAR, either. Motorsport at almost every level depends on sponsorship, manufacturer support and private investment. What makes Hamlin’s warning worrisome is his claim that the scale of the problem leaves the O’Reilly Series particularly vulnerable.

What should teams be rewarding?

The answer cannot simply be to hire every driver with the best statistics. Results depend on equipment, experience, team resources and the circumstances of individual races. A driver who brings sponsorship can also be an excellent prospect, and financial backing can give a promising racer the time needed to improve.

But teams should be clear about what they are evaluating.

A driver’s pace, racecraft, consistency, ability to develop and potential to win should matter alongside their commercial appeal. Sponsors can help make a program possible, but the long-term goal should be to build a competitive team, not merely fill a seat.
