FUKUOKA (TR) – Fukuoka Prefectural Police have arrested a 32-year-old man for allegedly breaking into a local restaurant and stealing over 1 million yen in cash, a late-night heist captured in detail on security footage, reports TV Asahi (Oct. 12).
At around 2:30 a.m. on October 4, a security camera inside the closed eatery recorded a hooded man using his smartphone flashlight to rummage through shelves.
The footage shows the suspect swiping several wads of bills, placing them into a case, and shoving them into his pocket along with rolls of coins. Approximately 1.11 million yen was stolen in the raid.
Just before fleeing the scene, the burglar lifted his head and stared directly into the lens of the security camera, revealing his face perfectly.
Four days later, police arrested self-employed Yasushi Ono based on the damning video evidence. Upon his arrest, however, Ono flatly denied the allegations.
“I have walked past the front of the store, but I have never been inside,” the suspect told investigators.
A string of similar burglaries targeting restaurants has recently plagued the surrounding area. Police are now investigating whether Ono is connected to the other break-ins.
