Ahead of the anniversary, Nyanza region is divided on supporting President William Ruto's re-election bid in the 2027 poll.
Some leaders, including Governor Gladys Wanga, Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi and MP Junet Mohamed, have publicly declared that ODM will support Ruto.
On his part, Homa Bay Senator Moses Kajwang questioned ODM's decision to support Ruto's re-election without preserving the option of fielding its own presidential candidate.
He says the party weakened its bargaining position by ruling out a presidential bid before negotiations with UDA, which should have pitted competing candidates against each other.
"We should never have declared that we are not going for the presidency. We should have said that ODM is going to field a candidate for the presidency, so that when we sit at the table, we are sitting as equals," Kajwang' says.
Kajwang' advises ODM to prioritise policy and development over individual personalities or government roles. He refutes claims that Raila has finalised a political strategy for 2027, stating that the former prime minister always maintains multiple options.
Likening Raila's four-decade political influence to Moses, Kajwang' suggests the community must select a successor. Raila's national impact, he adds, led to politicians defining their careers through either opposition or alliance with him.

Kenya's Ministry of Health confirmed a second Ebola case, activating the national emergency response. Director General Patrick Amoth announced that a 39-year-old man, a close contact of the first patient and under quarantine, tested positive after developing fever, fatigue, and joint pains.
Both the National Virology Reference Laboratory and KEMRI-CDC laboratory confirmed the diagnosis.
The WHO has been notified. Despite the new case, Kenya maintains no travel, trade, or public gathering restrictions, emphasising that Ebola is not airborne and spreads through direct contact with bodily fluids.
The public is advised to remain calm, stay alert for symptoms like fever, fatigue, muscle/joint pains, vomiting, diarrhoea, and unexplained bleeding, and seek immediate medical attention if these occur.
Amoth urged respect for the affected family's privacy, discouraged unverified information, and directed the public to rely on official Ministry of Health updates via the toll-free line 719.

Former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu is returning to prison after the High Court upheld his conviction and sentence in a KSh 588.7 million corruption case and revoked his bond.
Justice Rose Ougo of the Milimani Anti-Corruption High Court dismissed appeals from Waititu, Luka Mwangi Wahinya, and Chege, affirming their convictions and sentences for the irregular award of a road construction tender in Kiambu County.
The judgment, delivered on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, stated the prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubt. Justice Ougo also overturned acquittals on money laundering charges for the three men and Waititu's wife, Susan Wangari, ordering all four to appear before the trial court for mitigation and sentencing.
Waititu and Wahinya, previously on bond, were ordered to Nairobi Remand Prison. Wangari was sent to Lang'ata Women's Prison until Monday, October 19, when all four are due for mitigation and sentencing on the money laundering charges at the Milimani Anti-Corruption Chief Magistrate's Court.
The High Court found no reason to alter the penalties, dismissing arguments against the sentences. Justice Ougo stated that the fines, imposed under the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Act, were mandatory and lawfully applied.

Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka's Azimio La Umoja Coalition faces a legal setback after the Political Parties Dispute Tribunal (PPDT) issued interim orders blocking its rebranding as The Ukombozi Alliance (TUA).
The PPDT directed the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) to halt the new name's registration due to an existing claim by a petitioner who had already reserved "Ukombozi Peoples Party" (UPP).
The Wiper Patriotic Front is also involved in the dispute. The Tribunal's ruling on October 13 explicitly prevents the ORPP from approving or registering TUA, deeming the matter urgent and setting October 29 for a compliance review and further directions.
This decision significantly impedes Azimio's rebranding strategy for the 2027 General Election.
