The University of Sierra Leone has rusticated Edwina Hawa Jamiru, a student at Fourah Bay College (FBC), for one academic session following a disciplinary investigation into allegations that she insulted the Dean of the Faculty of Law, Professor Alusine Jalloh.
According to a disciplinary letter addressed to Jamiru, the decision was taken by the Vice-Chancellor and Principal on behalf of the University Senate after considering a report from the Fourah Bay College Disciplinary Committee.
The committee was established to investigate allegations that Jamiru used insulting language against Professor Jalloh in June 2026.
The letter stated that Jamiru was given an opportunity to defend herself in accordance with the principles of natural justice. During the proceedings, she reportedly admitted to writing the posts but maintained that her comments were directed at the Dean’s actions rather than at him personally.
However, after examining the evidence presented, the committee found her guilty of using insulting and disrespectful language against Professor Jalloh in the Faculty of Law’s WhatsApp forum.
The university subsequently approved the committee’s recommendation that she be rusticated for one academic session, covering the 2025/2027 academic year, as stated in the letter.
Jamiru is expected to resume her studies in the 2027/2028 academic session at the level where she left off, identified in the letter as Year II. She will also be required to pay her fees in full and complete registration before being allowed to attend lectures.
The letter further stated that Jamiru has the right to appeal the disciplinary decision to the Court of the University of Sierra Leone under Part IX, Section 50(5) of the Universities Act, 2021.
Any appeal must be submitted within 14 days of receiving the letter.
