The Algarve has enjoyed a strong showing at two major international tourism award programmes, with the region itself named Europe’s Leading Beach Destination 2026 and a string of Algarve hotels, resorts and attractions also taking home titles.
The results have been welcomed by the Association of Algarve Hotels and Tourist Enterprises (AHETA), which says the accolades reinforce the Algarve’s standing as one of Europe’s leading tourism destinations.
The World Travel Awards’ European winners were announced at a gala in Kotor, Montenegro, on October 17, where Portugal itself was also crowned Europe’s Leading Destination.
For the Algarve, however, the headline distinction was another victory as Europe’s Leading Beach Destination, adding to a long list of previous wins in the category. The region has also been named the World’s Leading Beach Destination several times, most recently in 2025.
Several individual Algarve businesses also featured prominently among the 2026 winners.
At European level, Pine Cliffs Residence was named Europe’s Leading Hotel Residences, while Hyatt Regency Vilamoura Algarve took Europe’s Leading Lifestyle Hotel.
Dunas Douradas Beach Club was recognised as Europe’s Leading Resort Villas, Cascade Wellness Resort as Europe’s Leading Sports Resort and Aquashow Water Park as Europe’s Leading Water Park.
The Algarve also dominated a number of Portugal-specific categories.
AP Adriana Beach Resort was named Portugal’s Leading All-Inclusive Resort, while Hotel Quinta do Lago took Portugal’s Leading Beach Resort.
Cascade Wellness Resort added another accolade as Portugal’s Leading Family & Wellness Resort, while Hilton Vilamoura As Cascatas Golf Resort & Spa was named Portugal’s Leading Family Resort.
Domes Lake Algarve, Autograph Collection collected Portugal’s Leading Luxury Resort, Quinta do Lago retained the title of Portugal’s Leading Resort and Dunas Douradas Beach Club was named Portugal’s Leading Villa Resort. Quinta do Lago’s win marks a second consecutive year in that category.
Golf resort also recognised
AHETA also highlighted recognition for Amendoeira Golf Resort, near Alcantarilha, at the World Luxury Travel Awards.
According to the association, the resort was distinguished for the second consecutive year as Southern Europe’s Best Golf Course and Southern Europe’s Most Sustainable Golf Destination.
Amendoeira features two 18-hole championship courses – the Faldo Course and O’Connor Jnr. Course – as well as a nine-hole academy course and other sporting facilities.
For AHETA, the awards should be viewed not only as recognition of what the Algarve has already achieved, but also as an incentive to continue raising standards.
The association said the distinctions reflect the work of tourism businesses and their employees while underlining the importance of continuing to invest in sustainability, innovation and hospitality.
“Excellence is a path that never ends,” AHETA said, arguing that the awards help consolidate the Algarve’s role in promoting Portugal internationally.
“On the one hand, these recognitions recognise the quality of service, the natural heritage and the Algarve’s infrastructures. On the other, they should act as motivation to continue doing more and better,” it added.
