Veteran diplomat steps up to lead Washington’s mission in Greece as defence and energy ties top the agenda.
Career diplomat Josh Huck has taken over as head of the US diplomatic mission in Greece, officially assuming duties as chargé d’affaires ad interim on 15 October 2026, the Athens-Macedonian News Agency (AMNA) reported.

Huck, a career member of the US Foreign Service with the rank of minister-counselor, is no stranger to Athens. He most recently served as deputy chief of mission at the US Embassy in Greece.
In his new role, he will lead efforts to advance US priorities and further strengthen the longstanding strategic partnership between Washington and Athens.
Defence and energy at the top of the agenda
The United States reaffirmed its commitment to close cooperation with Greece. It highlighted defence and security ties, regional energy security, trade and investment, and shared interests in the Eastern Mediterranean and beyond.
Huck takes the helm as bilateral cooperation remains focused on regional stability and wider strategic interests.
A specialist in Greece, Cyprus and the region
Before returning to Athens, Huck served as deputy assistant secretary of state overseeing policy for Southern Europe and the Caucasus. He was previously director of the State Department’s Office of Southern European Affairs, responsible for Greece, Cyprus, Türkiye and Malta.
His diplomatic career has taken him to Shanghai, Tokyo, Sofia, Rangoon, Taipei and Hong Kong, as well as senior posts at the State Department in Washington, D.C.
Huck holds a bachelor’s degree from Johns Hopkins University, a master’s degree from the International University of Japan, and a certificate from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies in Bologna, Italy.
