Foodpreneur, Chichi Yakubu, has joined prominent female voices condemning the alleged sexual abuse of female students at Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS), which has sparked national outrage.
In a video statement, the entrepreneur said, “Every time I hear stories like this, I think about the young girls involved. These are someone’s daughters, someone’s sisters entrusted to an institution to be educated, nurtured and protected. How did we get to a point where the very people entrusted with protecting our children are sometimes the ones accused of hurting them?”
Ms. Yakubu said sexual abuse happens far more often than society admits, with many girls suffering in silence out of fear or threats.
“The sad reality is that so many girls suffer in silence. Some are afraid to speak up. Some are threatened. And even more heartbreaking, some actually find the courage to speak up, but nobody listens,” she said, and added, “We cannot continue to raise our daughters to be praying in a society that refuses to protect them.”
She stressed that child protection is not just women’s issue but concerns fathers, mothers, teachers, school authorities, religious leaders and policymakers.
“We need to build a society where children feel safe enough to speak up, where their voices are taken seriously, and where people in positions of authority are held accountable,” she stated.
Ms. Yakubu called for a thorough and transparent investigation into the Obuasi SHTS allegations, with protection, privacy and psychological support for the victims.
“If anyone is found responsible, justice must be served. And if there were people who knew it was happening and deliberately looked the other way, they too must be held accountable. No title, no position, no influence should ever place anyone above responsibility,” she added.
She further appealed to survivors: “To every girl out there who has experienced any form of sexual abuse, you are not the one who should carry the shame. You deserve to be heard, you deserve to feel safe, and you deserve justice.”
“What happens to these girls when the cameras have gone and the conversations have stopped? We cannot allow this to become just another trending story. These girls deserve action, protection and justice,” she pointed out.
The condemnation comes after an investigative documentary by JoyNews journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni titled “Inside the Dreaded Headmaster’s Bungalow,” which alleged that the headmaster of Obuasi SHTS, Zakaria Abdulai, sexually abused some female students.
The number of alleged victims has risen from 5 to 19, according to the journalist.
Reports indicate that complaints were made as early as February 2026 to the school’s Girl Child Coordinator, and in March to the Obuasi Municipal Education Directorate, but were not escalated to the Ministry of Education in Accra.
