With Linux 7.3 there are some nice Btrfs performance improvements to enjoy while the in-development Linux 7.4 kernel is set to bring some additional performance optimizations for this copy-on-write file-system.
For those transparently compressing their file-system with Btrfs' Zstd compression support, Linux 7.4 will provide for slightly faster Zstd decompression. There are minor speed-ups around +8MB/s faster Zstd decompression with Btrfs for this next kernel release.
The updated Btrfs code also has reduced contention of the inode extent map lock to improve situations like when Btrfs' shrinker processes inodes without extent maps should see time reductions of 10-20%.
Another performance improvement for Btrfs on Linux 7.4 is a reflink speed-up with reordered locking and flushing to optimize for more common cases.
Btrfs with Linux 7.4 also brings error handling fixes, various code clean-ups, a number of bug fixes, and other improvements.
