KARACHI: Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) Karachi on Thursday launched a 10-day fumigation campaign across all districts of the city, while Alkhidmat Karachi will carry out spraying at government offices to prevent the breeding of mosquitoes and flies and avert dengue and malaria outbreaks.
JI Karachi chief Monem Zafar inaugurated the drive and told reporters that the city and its citizens needed the spray, which would cover every district without any political or regional discrimination. He said the campaign aimed to stop mosquitoes and flies from breeding and to protect citizens from diseases such as dengue and malaria.
Monem Zafar said that given poor sanitation arrangements and garbage heaps across the city, a spray campaign alone was not enough to prevent dengue, malaria and other diseases — the city’s sanitation and drainage system also needed improvement. He said the Sindh government, the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board and the Water Corporation should fulfill their responsibilities to control problems caused by garbage heaps and stagnant water.
The JI leader said that despite a Rs393 billion health budget for the province, citizens were not receiving better medical treatment facilities at government hospitals in the city, including Jinnah Hospital, Civil Hospital and Abbasi Shaheed Hospital. He also expressed sorrow and grief over the tragic roof collapse at a private school in Peshawar, in which 35 children and a teacher died.
Sympathising with the affected families, he said the government should provide immediate medical assistance to the injured children and take necessary steps to help the affected families. He prayed for patience for the families of the deceased children and the early recovery of the injured. Monem Zafar further said that due to garbage heaps and drainage problems in Karachi, there was a growing fear of mosquito breeding and the spread of dengue, malaria and other diseases.
He said the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board’s basic responsibility was to collect garbage from houses, take it to landfill sites and supervise the entire process, but garbage heaps were seen everywhere in the metropolis. Similarly, problems in the water supply and drainage system caused water to accumulate in various areas, leading to mosquito breeding. He urged citizens to keep their houses and surroundings clean, not allow water to accumulate and take precautionary measures to prevent diseases.
Alkhidmat Karachi CEO Naveed Ali Baig said Alkhidmat carried out spray work throughout the year, but the 10-day fumigation campaign had been specially launched at the Karachi level. He said that during the campaign, Alkhidmat would spray government and private institutions, educational institutions, hospitals and other places, along with residential areas, and that Alkhidmat’s spray vehicles would carry out fumigation daily.
