Gavin McKenna's difficult start to the season with the Toronto Maple Leafs took another frustrating turn tonight, as the highly touted young forward found himself watching from the bench for the entire third period of Toronto's overtime loss to the Buffalo Sabres.
McKenna finished the night with just 6:36 of ice time, a startlingly low total for a player who arrived in Toronto with enormous expectations. While the Maple Leafs ultimately fell short against Buffalo, the bigger story may be what happened to McKenna and what it could mean for his immediate future with the club.
Head coach Jim Hiller confirmed after the game that the decision to keep McKenna out of the lineup in the third period was his, explaining that the forward had already spent a considerable amount of time sitting during a stretch of penalties.
"That was my decision… we went for a stretch we had those penalties. We wanted to get him out there. He sat for so long and he sits through the intermission. Probably should've gotten him out at the start of the third. I'll talk to him about that."
Hiller's comments suggest that the situation was at least partially influenced by the flow of the game, rather than necessarily representing a definitive judgment on McKenna's overall ability. Still, the admission that he probably should have gotten the youngster back onto the ice at the beginning of the third period will do little to quiet questions about how the coaching staff currently views the young forward.
For a player trying to establish himself at the NHL level, opportunities to build confidence and find a rhythm are crucial. Spending an entire period watching from the bench, particularly in a tight game that eventually went to overtime, is hardly an ideal way to develop momentum.
McKenna's early struggles also put the Maple Leafs in a difficult position. Toronto needs to find a way to get the most out of a player with significant potential, but the coaching staff must also prioritize winning games and putting the best possible lineup on the ice. If Hiller believes McKenna is struggling to keep up with the pace or meet the team's expectations, reduced minutes could become a recurring theme until the forward shows improvement.
The immediate question now is whether McKenna will receive another opportunity to prove himself or whether Hiller will begin scaling back his role even further. A reduced assignment on the third line, fewer power-play opportunities or even a healthy scratch could become possibilities if the coaching staff feels the rookie needs time to reset. A move to the AHL, if appropriate under the circumstances, could also enter the conversation, although one difficult game alone should not determine his future.
There is reason to exercise patience. Earlier this season, Hiller described McKenna as seemingly "unflappable" and praised the young forward's exceptional talent when he has time and space with the puck.
That assessment suggests the coach recognizes the potential, even if the transition to the NHL has not been entirely smooth.
Still, tonight's benching is a significant moment in McKenna's young Toronto career. The Leafs need him to develop, but he also needs meaningful ice time to do so. How Hiller handles the situation in the next game could reveal whether this was simply a difficult night or the beginning of a more substantial change in McKenna's role.
For now, the best outcome for both sides would be a conversation behind closed doors, followed by an opportunity for McKenna to respond on the ice. One benching does not define a young player's career, but what happens next could go a long way toward determining how quickly he finds his footing in Toronto.
