The FBI is investigating an attempted arson at the federal building in downtown Atlanta that houses the office of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the agency that detains and deports migrants. The attack happened on the night of Tuesday 20 October 2026, and nobody was hurt.
The same building also hosts Atlanta’s immigration court, so the case touches the daily work of migrants, lawyers and officials in Georgia. For American readers, it adds to a tense debate over how the country enforces its immigration laws.
What Happened on Tuesday Night
An unidentified man threw an incendiary device at the building at 180 Ted Turner Drive around 9:30 p.m. Eastern Time on Tuesday 20 October, according to the FBI’s first statement and local station WALB.
Police closed the street and cleared the scene at about 1:30 a.m. on Wednesday 21 October, UPI reported. Local reporters at the scene saw no evidence that anything had caught fire.
Investigators collected items from the pavement outside the building. According to UPI, these included a plastic lighter and a shopping bag holding what looked like two bottles of lighter fluid, though officials have not said whether they were part of the device.
What the FBI Has Said
The FBI said its agents and evidence response technicians were on site collecting evidence. It added that there was no known threat to public safety.
By Wednesday the bureau was treating the case as attempted arson and published a description and an image of the man it wants to identify. The FBI has asked anyone with information to come forward.

Why This Building Matters
The Atlanta building is the base of ICE’s field office for the area and the home of the city’s immigration court. Migrants facing deportation hearings, and the officers who detain them, pass through the same address.
ICE has become a focus of political protest across the United States. This is not the first time the Atlanta site has been targeted, since federal prosecutors have charged a separate suspect, who remains at large, over a July 2020 attack there. That case is unrelated to what the FBI has said about Tuesday’s incident.
What It Means for You
Travellers and residents in Atlanta should expect a heavier security presence around federal buildings while the inquiry continues. The FBI has said there is no known wider threat to the public.
Anyone with an immigration hearing at the downtown court should check with the court or their lawyer for any change to access or schedules. No such change has been announced in the reporting we reviewed.
What Is Not Known
The man’s name, motive and any link to a group or political cause have not been made public. Nobody has been charged, and any suspect remains innocent unless a court finds otherwise.
Reports differ on the exact time, with some giving 8:14 p.m. rather than 9:30 p.m. ET, and the FBI has not published a final timeline. Officials have also not said what the device was made of or whether the items found on the pavement were part of it.
