The Bryson Fire is still ripping through the hills north of Malibu on Friday morning, burning 200 acres with just 5% containment, as officials continue to prompt residents to leave where necessary.

Several evacuation orders and warnings have been issued, and officials have closed roads in the area.

The blaze is burning just north of Encinal Canyon Road and is threatening LA County juvenile detention facility Camp Fred Miller to its east and the Malibu Country Club to its west.

Malibu officials told the California Post Friday morning that they were not aware of any homes damaged or destroyed by the fire yet.

A 6:07 a.m. CAL FIRE status report from Friday morning had little new developments outside of the fact that the fire had been 0% contained the night before and firefighters appeared to fight it back a little, with 5% containment. No injuries have been reported from the fire.

The blaze broke out shortly before 5 p.m. Thursday near Encinal Canyon Road and Mulholland Highway, close to Los Angeles County’s Camp Kilpatrick, according to fire officials.

The flames quickly tore through thick brush, growing from roughly a half-acre to five acres in just 15 minutes before ballooning to 20 acres within 30 minutes. By about an hour after ignition, the fire had scorched at least 40 acres, with wind-driven spot fires erupting ahead of the main blaze.

Wide evacuation orders and warnings had then been issued. It’s unclear what started the fire.

Powerful overnight winds had been expected to fuel the fire. Malibu is still under a Red Flag Warning until Saturday at 8:00 p.m., with a Wind Advisory persisting until 8 p.m. Friday. A Heat Advisory in the area is also in effect until Saturday at 8:00 p.m.

Los Angeles County officials are expected to hold a press conference at 8:30 a.m. to address the fire.

Evacuated residents are to head to Agoura High School in Agoura Hills. Animal shelters for small and large animals can be found at Agoura Animal Care Center and Pierce College Equestrian Center respectively.

PCH is still open in both directions as of Friday morning, though the following roads are closed:

• Decker Road and Encinal Canyon Road
• Kanan Road and Mulholland Highway
• Mulholland Highway and Westlake Boulevard

Malibu residents are still traumatized by the January 2025 Palisades Fire, which lit 720 homes ablaze on the city’s eastern side. Evacuees say they have confidence that firefighters will prevent another disaster, but watching another fire grow closer to their homes is scary.

“There’s not really much you can do except, you know, wait and hope that, you know, all these wonderful firemen will, you know, get control of it,” evacuee Susan Booker told NBC LA. “But it’s really windy, and it’s really scary to see this happening again so close to the house.”

The governor’s office fought with concerned locals over the state’s responsibility for the land the fire sits on.

“‘Responsibility Area’ designations indicate which government agency pays for and manages emergency wildfire response. Response in this area is paid for by the State but managed by the County. It does not have anything to do with who is responsible for property maintenance and clearing defensible space before a fire,” Newsom’s press office wrote on X.

They then noted that state resources are engaged in fighting the fire.
