Olympiacos Piraeus secured a 1-0 away victory over Marseille on Thursday, with Santiago Hezze scoring the decisive goal in the 42nd minute at the Stade Vélodrome. The result gave the Greek side six points from their opening two matches in the UEFA Europa League’s league phase, following their 2-1 win over Jagiellonia Białystok in September.
The revamped competition features 36 teams in a single league table, with each club playing eight matches against different opponents.
The top eight qualify directly for the round of 16, while teams finishing ninth to 24th enter a two-legged knockout playoff.
Olympiacos’ second consecutive victory strengthened their position in the race for a place in the knockout stages. Their next European fixture is at home against Sparta Prague on Oct. 22.
