Family, friends, fans and admirers gathered in an atmosphere of deep emotion on Sunday morning, October 18, at the Holy Trinity Church in Nikaia, Piraeus, for the 40-day memorial service of singer Giorgos Mazonakis. The memorial prayer was held at 9:30 a.m., immediately after the Divine Liturgy.

The singer’s grief-stricken parents and two sisters attended the service, surrounded by close friends, fellow artists, and people who had loved him. Large crowds filled the church’s courtyard to honor an artist who left an indelible mark on Greek music.

Forty days after his death, mourners returned to a place closely tied to his roots and personal journey. Nikaia, the neighborhood where he grew up and spent a formative part of his life, remained a touchstone for him and for those who knew him long before he became one of the most recognizable figures on the Greek music scene.

Because of the large turnout, authorities put heightened measures in place to keep crowds moving and prevent overcrowding. Police created a corridor through the middle of the courtyard, while access to the church interior was restricted to the singer’s immediate family.

The memorial took place in the shadow of recent toxicology findings, which revealed the presence of several substances, including midazolam, propofol, and flumazenil, according to Dr. Giorgos Fitsialos, technical advisor to the singer’s family, speaking to Mega. Fitsialos said the presence of these substances is a key element that must be examined as part of the investigation into the circumstances of the singer’s death.
