With its sweeping silhouette, sharp tailoring and high-neck silhouette, this Reiss coat has all the makings of a winter wardrobe hero. Here’s why it’s the coat to invest in now – and how to style it.
A good winter coat can forgive a multitude of outfit sins. Running late and thrown on yesterday’s jeans? Nobody needs to know. Wearing the same grey wool jumper for the third time this week? Consider it a uniform. The right coat has a wonderful knack for making even the most hastily assembled outfit look entirely put together and deliberate.
And if the autumn/winter 2026 catwalks taught us anything, it’s that funnel-neck outerwear is having a moment. Ever since Phoebe Philo reintroduced the style in her first collection in 2023, the high neck silhouette has been everywhere across the collections. At Bottega Veneta and Burç Akyol, high, face-framing collars gave classic coats a sculptural feel, while sharp tailoring and navy blue continued to make a convincing case for investing in the classics. This season, it’s all about sweeping lengths, strong shoulders and neck-up silhouettes that do the hard work for you.
Which brings me to this rather fabulous navy wool-blend coat from Reiss. With its longline silhouette, padded shoulders and double-breasted fastening, it has all the makings of a forever coat. And while black is often the go-to, there’s something infinitely chic about navy. It’s softer than black but as a neutral, it’s just as easy to style.
But how to style it? The trick is not to be too precious with it. Pair it with charcoal-grey tailoring and a fine-knit roll-neck for a polished take on everyday dressing, or throw it over dark blue wide-leg jeans (try this Calvin Klein pair), a white T-shirt and suede bag for something more relaxed. Personally, I love navy with chocolate brown: add a burgundy or espresso-coloured leather bag and suddenly even your most basic winter outfit looks wonderfully chic. I also love a hit of cherry red as an accent colour to lift any look, particularly timely at the moment as we head into the festive season. And don’t shy away from wearing navy with black, either. It’s one of those supposedly forbidden colour combinations that looks all the better for breaking the rules.
At £380, it’s certainly an investment, but think about the cost per wear? I suspect this one will earn its keep long after the temperatures rise again, and it’s a great dupe of the designer styles.
