Diego Leon’s agent has revealed that they will be exploring a move elsewhere if the player is not granted any first-team minutes between now and the end of 2026.
The 19-year-old has yet to make his Manchester United debut since signing from Cerro Porteno in a deal worth up to £7 million.
Diego Leon: The state of play
Leon has been featuring prominently with the Under-21s, but is seemingly chomping at the bit to be called up to the senior squad and stake his claim.
The fact that United are facing a crisis in his position at left-back has likely prompted his agent to go public with the youngster’s desire to feature under Michael Carrick, as it would provide one more option in Luke Shaw and Patrick Dorgu’s absences.
However, fellow academy star and left-back Harry Amass was kept at Old Trafford over the summer for depth, but Noussair Mazraoui and even Diogo Dalot have been preferred in the role in recent weeks, showing Carrick is opting for experience.
What Leon’s agent had to say
“If there isn’t a plan to break into the first team between December and January, we’ll look for a way out for him. A loan somewhere where he can compete, get playing time, and return to Manchester,” said Leon’s representative, Renato Bittar (via Sport Witness).
“The Championship is an option, as are other European leagues, but we don’t want to leave here. He’s performing well with the U21 team, he’s training well, and his physical condition is excellent.”
There may be more options for Leon to earn some minutes when United kick off their FA Cup campaign in the coming months, though their premature Carabao Cup exit may have convinced Carrick to go full-strength in order to avoid another embarrassment.
