The Nigeria APC early campaign opened on Saturday 24 October 2026 with a rally in Kaduna. President Bola Tinubu’s All Progressives Congress (APC) staged the flag-off at the Ranchers Bees Stadium, Premium Times reported.
By the calendar the electoral commission published, the party is not early, because campaigning has been legal since 19 August 2026. The vote is on Saturday 16 January 2027, so the flag-off comes 84 days before polling day.
Is the Nigeria APC Early Campaign Really Early?
The vote itself moved forward, which makes the Nigeria APC early campaign look early to an outside reader. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) first set 20 February 2027 and then chose 16 January 2027, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported.
INEC’s portal now lists the presidential and National Assembly vote for 16 January 2027 and the governorship vote for 6 February 2027. Campaigns end 24 hours before polling, so the presidential campaign closes on Friday 15 January 2027, Voice of Nigeria reported.
In 2022 the APC waited 48 days after campaigning opened on 28 September to hold its flag-off in Jos on 15 November, ThisDay reported. In 2026 the wait for the Nigeria APC early campaign was 66 days, and the rally came 84 days before polling against 102 in 2022.
How the Electoral Act 2026 Sets the Clock
Nigeria’s new Electoral Act 2026 says campaigns may begin only 150 days before an election, Voice of Nigeria reported on 29 July 2026. Counting back from 16 January 2027 gives 19 August 2026, so the Nigeria APC early campaign sits inside the legal window.
Governorship and state assembly campaigns open later, on 9 September 2026, and end on 5 February 2027. INEC said the repeal of the Electoral Act 2022 and the new Act altered key statutory timelines, according to NAN.
The same 150-day rule applied under the old law, section 94(1), and INEC’s then chairman Mahmood Yakubu said no penalty existed for starting earlier. He spoke at an Abuja roundtable in September 2025, according to allAfrica.
Why the APC Chose Kaduna
Senator Abdulaziz Yari, who directs the APC’s presidential campaign council, announced the date on Friday 9 October 2026 after briefing Tinubu in Abuja. He said the flag-off would be in Kaduna on 24 October, Blueprint reported.
The announcement gave no reason for the choice, but Kaduna-based analyst Haruna Ibrahim offered one to Daily Trust. Premium Times carried his remark that Kaduna is “more or less the centre of northern Nigeria”.
He also called Kaduna relatively safe compared with other northern states, with transport links that make it easier for supporters from neighbouring states to reach. Hotel rooms in Kaduna were fully booked before the Nigeria APC early campaign launch, and many supporters spent the night outdoors, Premium Times reported.
What Kaduna Voted in 2023
Kaduna did not go to Tinubu in 2023, even though the APC governs the state now. ThisDay and ICIR reported INEC’s count: the Peoples Democratic Party’s Atiku Abubakar 554,360 votes, Tinubu 399,293 and Labour’s Peter Obi 294,494.
Atiku won 14 of Kaduna’s 23 local government areas, Obi seven and Tinubu two, ThisDay reported. Kaduna State had 4,335,208 registered voters in 2023, according to INEC’s own voter-card list.
The seven North-West states held 22,255,562 registered voters, almost 24% of the national total of 93,469,008, on that INEC list. Lagos had 7,060,195, the most of any single state.
Governor Uba Sani, an APC member, won Kaduna’s 2023 governorship by 10,806 votes, 730,002 to 719,196 over the PDP’s Isa Ashiru, ThisDay reported. The Supreme Court dismissed the PDP’s appeal in January 2024, which settled his victory.
Atiku’s ADC and Obi’s NDC Face the APC
The two best-known opposition names now run on separate tickets. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar won the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential primary on Wednesday 27 May 2026 with 1,846,370 votes, NAN reported.
Rotimi Amaechi, a former Rivers State governor, finished second with 504,117, and he and third-placed Mohammed Hayatu-Deen rejected the result, ICIR reported. ADC chairman David Mark said the primary was not perfect but allowed a free contest.
Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party candidate, and Rabiu Kwankwaso left the ADC for the NDC, a newer party, ICIR reported. The Gazette reported in late May 2026 that Obi won the NDC nomination and named Kwankwaso, a former Kano governor, as his running mate.
The APC says Atiku and the ADC plotted to discredit the Nigeria APC early campaign launch with fake news and deepfakes, Daily Trust reported. Spokesman Dele Alake called a purported letter claiming N2.3 trillion (about US$1.73 billion) was released for the rally “a senseless and utterly baseless lie”.
What Comes Next on the Campaign Trail
The campaign council’s schedule, published by Blueprint, lists 37 stops, one in each of the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. After Kaduna the Nigeria APC early campaign moves to Calabar on Monday 2 November and Gombe on Tuesday 3 November.
Six more North-West stops follow by 17 December, and the tour ends in Lagos on Saturday 9 January 2027. Our news report on the Kaduna flag-off covers the day itself.
What Prediction Markets Say
Bettors on Polymarket gave Tinubu 68.5% and Obi 24.0% to win the presidency, as of 24 October 2026, 1:21 p.m. ET. Volume was US$135,959, and on Kalshi, regulated in the United States by the CFTC, Tinubu stood at 71%, Obi 17% and Atiku 3%.
A separate Polymarket bet on Kaduna’s governorship, with US$27,963 traded, gave Governor Uba Sani 64.0% and Mohammed Ashiru Isa 23.5%. The state governorship vote is set for 6 February 2027, three weeks after the presidential race.
Why we show this: prediction markets turn real-money bets into a live probability that moves within minutes of the news, which is why investors, campaigns and newsrooms in the United States now follow them closely. We show them next to polls and official results, never instead of them.
What It Means for US Readers
Investors in naira assets and bonds will get a result early in 2027, because the Nigeria APC early campaign runs toward a 16 January vote. The naira stood at about 1,329.80 to the US dollar on 24 October 2026, and its 2.1% one-day fall shows its sensitivity.
Campaign rallies draw large crowds and heavy security, so travellers to northern Nigeria can expect road closures and full hotels around such events. Zaidu Bala, media aide to the Kebbi governor, told Premium Times that hotels in Kaduna were fully booked.
What Is Not Known
The APC has not explained why it chose Kaduna. How many people filled the Ranchers Bees Stadium is still unknown.
Tinubu’s speech and any promises he made at the rally were not available when this explainer was written. The prediction-market prices were taken on the day of the rally, so they may move once voters have heard him.
