Amateur golfers will compete for honours when the 65th edition of the Lagos Amateur Open Golf Championship tees off in November at the Golf Section of Ikoyi Club 1938, Lagos.
Sponsored by FirstBank of Nigeria Limited through its first@Sports initiative, the tournament will bring together amateur players seeking to test their skills and improve their standing in the sport.
Recognised by the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR), the championship draws golfers from Nigeria and beyond, giving participants a chance to earn ranking points over 54 holes.
The event has become a fixture on Nigeria’s amateur golf calendar, with its 65th edition also marking 65 consecutive years of FirstBank’s sponsorship.
Beyond the title race, the tournament gives emerging golfers a platform to gain experience and develop their games against a competitive field.
At last year’s edition, Babatunde Oyalami emerged champion after recording a total gross score of 231 over three rounds. He opened with 78, improved to 75 in the second round and closed with another 78 to finish three shots clear of his nearest challenger.

The championship has also provided a platform for notable achievements in Nigerian golf. Peter Eben-Spiff became the first Nigerian golfer to be listed on the World Amateur Golf Ranking following his victory at the 58th edition.
This year’s competition is expected to continue that tradition, with players seeking the title and a chance to strengthen their amateur golf credentials.
Played over 54 holes, the Lagos Amateur Open tests competitors’ consistency and ability to sustain performance across three rounds at the Ikoyi Club course.
The November tournament will mark another edition of one of Nigeria’s longest-running amateur golf championships, as players compete for honours and the opportunity to make their mark in the sport.
