Myanmar’s military-backed government has released rare photographs of detained former leader Aung San Suu Kyi after officials delivered two books and sealed correspondence sent by Britain’s King Charles III.
The delivery took place on Monday, 19 October, in Myanmar’s capital, Naypyitaw, according to a statement from the country’s Presidential Press and Information Bureau.
Officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs handed over two books, The Land Gardeners: Soil to Table and Soil: The World at Our Feet, along with a
sealed envelope and diplomatic correspondence from the British monarch.
The first book, written by British gardening experts Bridget Elworthy and Henrietta Courtauld, explores the relationship between healthy soil, sustainable agriculture, and food production. The second is a catalogue accompanying an environmental exhibition in London.
King Charles has long advocated environmental protection and sustainable agriculture. He previously met Suu Kyi in London in 2017, when he was Prince of Wales and she was Myanmar’s state counsellor.
The Myanmar government released two photographs showing the 81-year-old Nobel Peace Prize laureate wearing a pale green traditional outfit and sitting across a table from two officials in a wood-panelled room.
According to the government’s statement, the meeting lasted approximately 10 minutes. Authorities did not disclose the contents of the correspondence or explain how the books were sent.
The photographs provide a rare glimpse of Suu Kyi, who has been largely isolated from the outside world since Myanmar’s military seized power in February 2021, overthrowing her elected government.
She is serving an 18-year sentence following convictions on charges including corruption, incitement, election fraud, and violations of the country’s state secrets law. She denies the charges, which her supporters and human rights organisations regard as politically motivated.
Suu Kyi was transferred to house arrest at an undisclosed residence in Naypyitaw in April 2026. In August, she met a representative of the International Committee of the Red Cross, marking rare independent international contact since her detention.
Her younger son, Kim Aris, who lives in Britain, welcomed the King’s gesture but warned against allowing Myanmar’s authorities to use the photographs to suggest that conditions surrounding his mother’s detention had improved.
In a statement to Radio Free Asia, Aris said he appreciated the King’s decision to send the books but stressed that his family still had no direct communication with Suu Kyi or independently verified information about her health.
The release of the photographs comes as President Min Aung Hlaing, who led the 2021 military coup, seeks greater international engagement following elections held under military rule.
The United Kingdom continues to call for Suu Kyi’s immediate and unconditional release, along with that of other people arbitrarily detained in Myanmar.
