A brave 15-year-old boy from Wentworth, KwaZulu-Natal, who spent his entire life defying medical expectations, has sadly passed away. Ford Hartze took his final breath on 15 October 2026, ending a courageous journey that inspired everyone around him for over a decade. Ford was admitted to hospital after suffering severe stomach cramps and intense neck pain caused by blood pressure complications in his arteries.
Despite doctors attempting to manage his severe pain and discomfort, his condition worsened suddenly when he suffered a severe cramp and clutched his heart. Medical personnel worked tirelessly to resuscitate him, but his organs had deteriorated over time due to chronic oxygen deprivation. According to a report by Southlands Sun, doctors explained that his body was no longer able to absorb oxygen effectively, leading to his final moments alongside his grieving mother, brother, and father figure.
A final gift of hope
Even in the depths of their grief, Ford’s family chose to honour his legacy by helping others in need. Following a request from a medical transplant team, his family consented to donate his corneas so that two visually impaired individuals could receive the gift of sight. His mother expressed that having experienced the painful wait on organ donor lists first-hand, she knew this final selfless gesture aligned with her son's generous spirit.
She shared her deep gratitude for the immense support from the Wentworth community, noting that the love they received helped her son build beautiful memories and reach major milestones throughout his 15 years. A public funeral service to honour Ford's life and pay final respects will take place on 24 October 2026 at 10:00 AM at the New Apostolic Church on Clausia Road in Merewent, where family, friends, and community members will gather to say their goodbyes.

Understanding Eisenmenger Syndrome
Ford's lifelong health battle stemmed from a diagnosis of Eisenmenger Syndrome during his infancy. According to medical insights provided by Mayo Clinic, Eisenmenger syndrome is a long-term complication of an uncorrected congenital heart defect that causes irregular blood flow between the heart and lungs, eventually leading to high blood pressure in the lungs and permanent organ damage.
