Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy praised his coaching staff after an unusual injury scare during Sunday’s comeback victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
McCarthy suffered an ankle injury after someone stepped on his foot during the first half. The incident forced him to seek treatment inside the sideline medical tent during halftime of the NFL game.
The Steelers trailed 13-3 at the break but rallied to secure a 26-19 overtime victory. Aaron Rodgers connected with rookie wide receiver Germie Bernard for the winning touchdown.

Despite McCarthy’s unexpected absence during halftime, Pittsburgh’s coaching staff managed the necessary adjustments. The head coach credited his assistants and players for keeping the process organized.
“They didn’t miss a beat,” McCarthy said. “Adjustments were made, and halftime’s quick, anyway.”
He explained that communication remained the priority while he received treatment.
“Frankly, the biggest part was really just getting the offensive conversations to me when the guys came out,” McCarthy said. “I thought the guys did what they needed to do.”
Steelers’ comeback win highlights adaptability
The rare moment for the Steelers showed the importance of having a coaching structure that functions under unexpected circumstances. NFL teams have limited time to adjust at halftime, making clear communication essential.
The Steelers faced a big challenge after struggling offensively in the opening half. However, they showed resilience and gave the coaching staff a positive result to build upon.
Pittsburgh’s comeback also reinforced Rodgers’ importance in high-pressure situations, who said, “These are the most important moments for us as a team to grow. This is a trajectory win.” His connection with Bernard delivered the decisive score, while the rookie provided a key target during the team’s comeback.

McCarthy’s injury was shocking because head coaches rarely require treatment inside the medical tent. Still, the incident did not prevent Pittsburgh from completing its comeback.
The Steelers will now look forward to their international matchup against the New Orleans Saints in France. McCarthy will hope his ankle improves before the trip.
