The verified Orania account posted the reflection on 20 October, asking followers whether the town should plant more trees
South Africans in the comments flooded the post with tree suggestions, from date palms to moringa and wild figs

Orania, the small Afrikaner enclave nestled in the Northern Cape's Karoo, looks nothing like it did in the early days. On 20 October, the town reminded followers of what made it possible: trees.

The post explained that when Orania's founders purchased the town in 1991, it was bare against the surrounding dry Karoo landscape. The pioneers who settled there began planting trees almost immediately, and those trees now cast shade across an entire community. The post read:

"Planting a tree indicates confidence in the futur. Many of the pioneers are no longer alive, but the trees they planted are still casting their shadow."

The reflection by Orani drew a warm response from followers, with many weighing in on which trees to plant next. The post framed Orania's growth as something deeply symbolic. Just as a tree takes years to mature, the town itself was built with the long view in mind. The founders planted not only saplings but a belief that the settlement would outlast them. Summer, the post noted, is when that vision becomes most visible. The town stands out as a pocket of green against the arid Karoo, a contrast made possible entirely by deliberate planting decades ago. Read the post below:

South Africans in the comments came armed with suggestions:

Michael Everton wrote:

"Definitely plant more trees. Plant various species and in suitable areas; plan where. Suggest Wild Fig trees, Milkwood trees, and others. They will need watering too."

Petro Harmse said:

"Trees, you can never have enough trees. The birds will love you!"

Slavic-King Nick recommended:

"Do arid crops: Date Palm Trees (perfect for Karoo desert), Aloe Vera (used for sunburn, drinks, health and beauty)."

Wilna Bodenstein offered a meaningful idea:

"How about the option to personally plant a tree when a loved one dies, can also attach a name tag to the tree?"

Brenda Holland noted:

"Trees causing more water to fall into the area."

Pieter Engelbrecht added:

"Very beautiful. You must also start planting far away in the meantime, where the city is still going to grow."
