Sarah Platt's (Tina O'Brien) trial got underway in Coronation Street today, while daughter Bethany (Lucy Fallon) faced a dilemma of her own.
While banged up on remand for the murder of Theo Silverton (James Cartwright), Sarah ended her relationship with Kit Green (Jacob Roberts). She had no idea that he was secretly battling stage three breast cancer, and making a series of reckless decisions.
One of these was to sleep with Bethany, who earlier this week discovered she is pregnant with his child.
As today's instalment kicked off, she rushed along Victoria Street, taking a call from her terrified mother. Bethany did her best to calm Sarah’s nerves before explaining that she had to go and making her way into the Rosamund Street Medical Centre to speak to Dr Susan Gaddas (Christine Mackie).
Bethany confided in the GP that she'd taken a test and was eight weeks pregnant, and that she wanted a termination. Gaddas encouraged her to speak to the baby's father or a family member about her decision before she proceeded.
Determined to tell Kit the news, Bethany returned to the Redbank Apartments, only to discover uncle David Platt (Jack P. Shepherd) and former stepfather Adam Barlow (Sam Robertson) waiting to accompany her to court.
During the trial, the prosecution barrister told the jury that Sarah had been so enraged by the way Theo had treated his husband Todd Grimshaw (Gareth Pierce) that she had taken matters into her own hands and killed him. He insisted that this wasn't the case, and that Sarah was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.
When DS Lisa Connor-Swain (Vicky Myers) and Theo's ex-wife Danielle Silverton (Natalie Anderson) gave their evidence, the proceedings took a devastating turn for Sarah.

Lisa admitted from the witness stand that the defendant had taken a considerable amount of time to confess, despite claiming she had acted in self-defence. Danielle then testified that Theo would never have harmed a woman and had posed no threat to Sarah.
Unable to cope with the testimony, Sarah broke down in tears. The judge adjourned the proceedings, and she was led away as her family exchanged anxious glances.
Later, David accused Lisa of undermining Sarah’s defence before turning on Kit in the Rovers and berating him for his lack of support. Losing his temper, Kit told the Platts that he wanted nothing more to do with them.
As he stormed out, David made it clear to Todd that his testimony had become Sarah’s only hope and that her freedom now depended on him.
Will Bethany ever find opportunity to talk about her news, and will Sarah be found guilty, or not guilty?
