SHILLONG, Oct 14: The Meghalaya government has decided to allot dedicated parking spaces for Assam-registered tourist vehicles at Keating Road and Polo to streamline traffic and address long-standing parking issues.
The decision was taken during a meeting on Wednesday following requests from the Assam government and Assam-based tourist taxi operators.
Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar told reporters that the MUDA parking lot at Keating Road will be utilised for Assam tourist taxis. Additionally, the government has earmarked space at the SRGT parking lot in Polo to accommodate 10 to 15 Assam-based buses.
Dhar clarified that the government rejected a proposal to park these buses at the MUDA lot in Police Bazar, citing space constraints for large vehicles. He noted that the move aims to prevent random parking of outside vehicles across the city, which has been causing significant public inconvenience.
Regarding the demand from Meghalaya taxi drivers for a dedicated parking spot at Guwahati Airport, the Minister informed that the matter has been taken up with the Adani Group.
He stated that space will be allotted to Meghalaya cabs once the ongoing construction at the airport’s parking area is completed.
