Redundancies accounted for a small but growing share of Commonwealth public servants who left their jobs last year.
More than 1,300 federal public servants took redundancies last year, according to the latest APS employment data.
Separation data from the Australian Public Service Commission (APSC) show that 11,602 mandarins left the public service in the year to June 2026. It’s marginally lower than the past two years.
Of these, 1,324 (11.4%) were retrenchments. It’s a substantial increase over the 3-4% figures seen over the past three years, and the highest of the Labor government’s tenure.
Most exits were resignations and retirements, at 6,023 (51.9%)
