Greycoat Research, a feline kidney care company whose work is grounded in AIM research, has launched its AIM Test kit in South Korea. The company plans to introduce the test in the United States and Japan.
The AIM Test checks for a specific variant in a cat’s AIM gene, providing genetic information that can inform kidney care. Owners can collect an oral cell sample from their cat and submit it for testing. They receive a report explaining the results, along with a care guide that takes their cat’s genetic characteristics into account. The service also includes real-life examples of care for cats with the variant.
AIM is a protein known to play a role in clearing cellular debris from the kidneys and supporting recovery after injury. In a 2026 study of 1,000 cats, researchers at Washington State University identified a specific AIM gene variant in 66% of the cats studied.
Greycoat Research plans to build on the AIM Test by developing kidney care consultation services that consider each cat’s genetic characteristics and current health status.
The company is also conducting a clinical study in South Korea in which cats receive its kidney care products for 28 days. The study has a target enrollment of 60 cats, including healthy cats and cats with stage 1–3 chronic kidney disease. It compares kidney and liver markers and the expression of genes related to inflammation and metabolism before and after the feeding period. It also includes AIM genetic testing.
The company plans a long-term study in which cats will receive its kidney care products for one year. This study will more thoroughly assess whether the products help maintain or improve kidney function over time. Findings from these studies will inform product and service development.
“Our goal is to translate genetic information and clinical research into effective kidney care tailored to each cat’s health needs,” said Claire Yun, CEO of Greycoat Research.
