October 20, Colombo (LNW): Sri Lanka will experience another day of scheduled electricity interruptions today (20) as authorities work to manage a shortfall in power generation caused by the continued shutdown of the Lakvijaya coal-fired power station in Norochcholai.
The Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) confirmed that it had authorised the interruptions following a request from the National System Operator (NSO). The approved schedule provides for one-hour power cuts between 4.30 pm and 9.00 pm, with the country divided into four designated groups.
Hospitals and other establishments delivering essential services will remain exempt from the scheduled outages to minimise disruption to critical public services.
All three generating units at the Norochcholai facility remain offline following the islandwide blackout last Saturday. The loss of generation capacity has placed additional pressure on the national electricity supply, prompting the NSO to introduce temporary restrictions to help balance demand and available power.
Similar interruptions were implemented across the country yesterday (19). NSO Chief Executive Officer Buddhika Samarasekara has indicated that the measures would also be required today and tomorrow (21) as authorities continue efforts to manage the ongoing supply constraints.
Consumers are advised to take the scheduled interruption period into account when planning household activities and other electricity-dependent tasks.
