The Detroit Red Wings are reportedly holding out for a major return for Dylan Larkin despite receiving multiple offers described as fair. NHL insider Nick Kypreos reported that Detroit is seeking a “triple, if not a home run,” suggesting the organization wants a package that exceeds a standard market-value return for its captain. The situation puts Detroit’s trade strategy under scrutiny. Larkin remains an experienced center and a key figure for the franchise, but any potential move depends on whether an interested team can meet the Red Wings’ demands and whether the captain is willing to approve the destination.
Why Dylan Larkin and the Detroit Red Wings await NHL trade clarity
Nick Kypreos reported that the Detroit Red Wings have multiple offers for Larkin that are considered fair, but the team has not accepted one because it is waiting for a more substantial package.
His description of the desired return as a “triple, if not a home run” signals that Detroit may be prioritizing an exceptional deal over a merely reasonable one. That distinction is important. An offer can be viewed as fair without providing the specific mix of immediate NHL talent and future assets that Detroit wants. Trading a captain is a significant roster decision, so the front office has reason to weigh both the player’s value and the long-term direction of the team.
Which NHL teams could make a stronger offer?
The Red Wings have more potential trade partners after Larkin reportedly expanded his list of acceptable destinations from three teams to 10. The list includes the Florida Panthers, Minnesota Wild, Vegas Golden Knights, Dallas Stars, Washington Capitals, Carolina Hurricanes, Utah Mammoth, Tampa Bay Lightning, New Jersey Devils and Colorado Avalanche. The Montreal Canadiens are not included, despite fan interest in bringing Larkin to Montreal.Minnesota and Vegas remain notable possibilities because they were among Larkin’s original preferred destinations. However, an interested team must balance the cost of acquiring him with its salary-cap position and the players it would need to surrender. Detroit reportedly wants established players who can contribute immediately, rather than a package made up mainly of draft picks and prospects.
How does Dylan Larkin’s contract affect trade talks?
Larkin’s contract is another major consideration. He is signed through the 2030-31 season on an eight-year, $69.6 million deal, carrying an average annual salary-cap hit of $8.7 million.
His full no-trade clause also means Detroit cannot simply send him to whichever team offers the largest package. Any move must account for his approved destinations and the financial realities facing potential buyers. That combination gives Larkin meaningful control over the process while placing pressure on the Red Wings to negotiate carefully. Expanding his list creates more possibilities, but it does not guarantee that any of the 10 teams can meet Detroit’s preferred price.
What happens next for the Detroit Red Wings?
The immediate question is whether interim general manager Shawn Horcoff can secure the type of return the organization wants. If another team improves its proposal with NHL-ready talent and future assets, the Red Wings could have a stronger reason to move forward. If not, the club may continue weighing its options rather than accepting an offer it considers insufficient. For now, the reported offers do not confirm that a trade is imminent. Kypreos’ update points to a gap between what Detroit considers an acceptable return and the larger package it hopes to receive. The next significant development will depend on whether an interested team is willing and able to improve its offer, and whether the deal fits Larkin’s contractual protections.
