PETALING JAYA: A 16-year-old teenager who allegedly attacked a teacher with an axe at Tunku Putra-HELP International School (TPH) in Kuching this morning livestreamed the incident on social media, police said.
Sarawak acting police commissioner Saifullizan Ishak said the recording, lasting 12 minutes and six seconds, showed the attack from the teenager’s perspective, reported Sinar Harian.
He said the video had since been removed by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission.
Saifullizan said police were investigating the case under Section 324 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt with a dangerous weapon and Section 6(1) of the Explosives Act 1957.
He said the student had been detained and later released on police bail.
Teacher recovering well
In a statement, the school said the teacher was in stable condition following the incident. It said students in the affected classroom managed to evacuate the area and no one else was injured.
The school was closed early as a precaution on police advice, and parents were notified to collect their children.
“As of now, the teacher is recovering well and has sustained no critical injuries.
“TPH is deeply grateful for our teacher’s bravery and composure during the incident, and wishes her a full recovery.
“The student suspected of being involved in the incident is no longer an active TPH student,” it said.
The school confirmed that classes would resume tomorrow after receiving clearance from the authorities. It said it had reviewed its safety protocols and tightened security measures.
Three auxiliary police officers will be stationed on the school grounds, while appropriate security checks will be conducted on people entering the campus.
The school is also considering more comprehensive long-term security measures.
Its senior leadership team will hold assemblies to explain the incident, address students’ concerns, and arrange counselling support for those who need it.
Separately, the Sarawak education department said it had contacted the school and was prepared to provide support to those affected.
