Verizon is rapidly advancing the development of next-generation wireless technologies, with the formal expansion of its 6G Innovation Forum (6GIF), which now includes industry powerhouses such as Amazon Web Services, Cisco, and Intel. This collaborative initiative aims to create an open and resilient 6G ecosystem that small businesses could leverage for innovative applications and enhanced operational efficiency.
Verizon’s Chief Technology Officer, Yago Tenorio, emphasizes the forum’s focus on building an AI-native 6G network designed to elevate 5G Advanced capabilities. “We are ensuring the AI-native 6G network is built from day one to scale 5G Advanced capabilities and translate these next-generation technologies into meaningful, real-world experiences for our customers,” states Tenorio.
The goal is not just theoretical advancements but practical, tangible solutions that can immediately impact business operations. For small business owners, this could mean enhanced connectivity options, improved access to cloud services, and new applications that capitalize on AI and immersive technologies.
The expanded 6GIF brings together nine members with diverse expertise, from cloud services to network security. This collaborative effort promises to unlock the full potential of 6G through testing innovative use cases, exploring new spectrum bands, and ensuring alignment with global standards. Given the rapid evolution of wireless technology, small businesses can anticipate a wave of new services and solutions designed to increase efficiency and customer engagement.
For instance, Verizon has highlighted its recent field trials focusing on Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC) technology. This pioneering work transforms cellular networks into large-scale sensors without requiring physical cameras, opening the door for innovative applications in public safety and environmental monitoring—key areas for small businesses engaged in event management, logistics, or outdoor services.
Two notable trials demonstrate ISAC’s potential. The first, conducted with Samsung, showcased crowd density detection at a large event. Using a single 5G base station, the technology monitored crowd movements effectively, enabling event organizers to streamline operations and manage safety more effectively. This application could be invaluable for small businesses involved in event planning, security, or crowd management, enhancing their ability to provide safe and enjoyable experiences.
Another demonstration involved Qualcomm’s cutting-edge network, which successfully tracked a drone’s position while simultaneously delivering high-speed mobile communications. This capability could facilitate enhanced safety measures for businesses that rely on drone services, whether it be for delivery, surveying, or agriculture.
Looking ahead, small businesses can expect the introduction of AI-native devices and wearables, like untethered smart glasses. These innovations demand seamless connectivity and ultra-low latency, traits that 6G is anticipated to deliver. Such advancements could revolutionize how businesses interact with customers and manage operations.
During a recent demonstration, Verizon showcased a prototype AI Sports Companion application that allows users to engage with sports events hands-free while receiving real-time statistics and updates through smart glasses. This sort of immersive experience could redefine customer engagement for businesses in the entertainment and event sectors, providing unique ways to enhance audience interaction and satisfaction.
While the advancements proposed by 6G and the current Verizon initiatives are promising, small business owners should also consider potential challenges. Transitioning to new technologies often involves significant investments in infrastructure and training. Additionally, the rapidly changing technological landscape necessitates continuous adaptation and innovation from businesses to stay competitive.
Verizon plans ongoing ecosystem demonstrations focused on showcasing the practical applications of emerging technologies, with the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles serving as a key proving ground for these innovations. The establishment of Verizon’s 6G Lab in the city further indicates a strong commitment to real-world testing, enhancing the potential for small businesses to benefit from early adoption of these technologies.
As the telecommunications landscape evolves, small business owners should keep a close watch on developments in the 6G arena. Engaging with these emerging capabilities may provide them with a significant competitive edge when they become commercially available.
