Itanagar, October 23: A 12-hour bandh called by anti-dam organisations against the proposed Siang Upper Multipurpose Project (SUMP) is underway across Siang and Upper Siang districts and parts of East Siang in Arunachal Pradesh on Friday.
The bandh has been called by several organisations, including the Adi Bane Kebang-United, SUMP-Affected Youth Association, Siang Indigenous Farmers Forum and Adi Galo Welfare Society, demanding that the government scrap the proposed project and withdraw armed forces from the region.
Meanwhile, Boleng police fired tear gas to disperse protesters near Ditte Dime, along the route towards Geku, on Friday.
Siang Superintendent of Police Kamdam Sikom said protesters had allegedly pelted stones at police personnel, prompting them to use tear gas to control the situation.
He said a bandh was also being observed in Boleng, while the overall situation across Siang district remained peaceful.
The proposed SUMP has faced opposition from sections of the local population, who have raised concerns over its potential impact on indigenous communities, land and livelihoods.
