SHAH ALAM: A 51-year-old lorry driver charged over a 12-vehicle crash that injured four people last Friday has been released on bail after paying a total of RM12,900.
His lawyer, Rohan Singh, said the bail was settled through two sureties after proceedings in two separate courts concluded this afternoon.
However, he said he was unsure who had acted as the bailors.
The courts set bail at RM9,000 with one surety for the charge of driving under the influence of drugs and RM3,900 with one surety for the drug consumption charge.
Earlier, C. Agilan pleaded not guilty to both charges in separate magistrates' courts.
On the first charge, Agilan was accused of driving a lorry under the influence of methamphetamine and amphetamine, causing him to lose control of the vehicle and injure four people aged between 17 and 58.
The incident occurred about 4.30pm along Persiaran Mokhtar Dahari, where the 10-tonne lorry allegedly travelled against the flow of traffic before crashing into 11 vehicles at the Alam Budiman traffic lights.
The charge was framed under Section 44(1A)(a) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which carries a maximum jail term of 10 years and a fine of up to RM50,000 upon conviction.
Deputy public prosecutor Alia Anisa Khairus Masnan sought bail of RM15,000 and requested that Agilan's driving licence be suspended.
Rohan sought a lower amount, telling the court that his client earned about RM1,700 a month and supported his non-working wife and 11-year-old child.
Magistrate Ameera Mastura Khamis granted bail of RM9,000 with one surety and suspended Agilan's driving licence pending the conclusion of the case.
In a separate case, Agilan also pleaded not guilty before magistrate Wan Noora Nisa Ngadirin to a charge of self-administering methamphetamine and amphetamine.
He allegedly committed the offence at the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division office in Section 11 about 11.30pm on the same day.
The charge, under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, carries a jail term of up to 2 years or a fine of up to RM5,000 upon conviction.
Deputy public prosecutor Nur Amirah Zahari proposed bail of RM7,000, while Rohan again sought a lower amount.
Wan Noora Nisa set bail at RM3,900 with one surety.
The courts fixed Dec 22 and Jan 11 next year for mention.
