Tiger Woods' children Sam and Charlie carry forward his golfing legacy

Tiger Woods’ impact on golf goes far beyond his record-setting accomplishments, major wins and decades of dominance on the PGA Tour. The 15-time major champion has also passed the game down to his children, Sam Alexis Woods and Charlie Axl Woods, providing them with opportunities to play competitive golf while developing interests of their own.But the next chapter of the Woods family sporting legacy is heading in two different directions. Sam has taken the academic route at Stanford University while Charlie has compiled a competitive junior golf resume and signed with Florida State University. Their paths show that Tiger’s influence still determines the family’s relationship with golf without necessitating that the two children take the same routes.

Details on Tiger Woods’ children Sam and Charlie and how they forge separate paths

Tiger Woods has two children from his ex-wife, Elin Nordegren. They have a daughter, Sam Alexis Woods (born 2007), and a son, Charlie Axl Woods (born 2009). Both children were introduced to the sport at an early age, with one of golf’s most recognizable faces as their father, but their interests went in different directions.Tiger’s busy professional schedule also colored the family’s experience with golf. Sam has previously said she associated the sport with being away from her father due to his tournament commitments.

Instead of jumping right into golf as a competitive endeavor, she sampled other sports, such as soccer and track and field.Charlie became interested in athletics at an early age and found himself drawn more and more to golf. He played with his father in professional exhibition events, giving him the chance to learn by direct experience and to be introduced to the competitive environment.Their many options underscore an important distinction: being Tiger Woods’ kids affords an unusual link to golf history, but it does not dictate how either will shape a future.

While Sam has made a name for himself through education and personal interests, Charlie is looking for opportunities to compete at the collegiate level.

Sam Alexis Woods balances school and family legacy

Sam Alexis Woods has lived a relatively low-key life considering how connected she is to one of the most famous athletes on the planet. Her educational journey has become a major part of her story, with Stanford University being a notable link to her father's university days.Tiger went to Stanford before turning pro in 1996, and was one of the top collegiate players of his generation. She’s at the same university as her dad, so there’s a family connection there, but her focus is academic, so it’s a different sort of experience from the sporting career of her dad, Sam.Golf is not the only sport that has interested Sam. As a child, she played soccer and took up track, broadening her interests outside her father’s professional world.

Her story illustrates that a family’s exposure to sport doesn’t necessarily result in a commitment to the same sport. Those moments put her in the public narrative of Tiger’s career without having to become a professional golfer herself. They also demonstrated how family members can assist sporting milestones by supporting and participating rather than competing.Where Sam is now is a compromise between keeping her own goals and staying linked to the legacy of her father.

With her Stanford education in her back pocket, she’s heading a different way than Charlie’s competitive golf dreams, but she’s still a part of the sport that influenced much of her childhood via major family events.Since there’s no public info about her longer-term career aspirations, it’s important to distinguish between confirmed educational info and speculation about what she might do after graduating.

Charlie Axel Woods takes the competitive golf route

Charlie Axel Woods took a more direct route to competitive golf, honing his game through junior tournaments, high school championships and playing alongside his father.

His tournament results have helped cement his place among young golfers, but his surname has also brought attention to his progress.Charlie made his PNC Championship debut with Tiger in 2020 at age 11. The tournament, which pairs major champions with family members, gave the father and son a chance to compete together on a recurring basis. They were the runners-up in 2021, an example of how they could be a contender in a family competition while sharing the course. The next big step came Feb. 10, 2026, when Charlie announced his verbal commitment to play collegiate golf at Florida State University in 2027. The ruling means he will continue his college career at a different school than Stanford, where Tiger played before turning pro and where Sam is studying. The Florida State golf program has produced some great players, including major winner Brooks Koepka. Charlie’s commitment is therefore an opportunity to develop in a competitive college setting while following his individual objectives in the sport.

A verbal promise is not the same as actually going through the official process of enrolling in college.Tiger has also talked about how college recruitment has evolved, saying that communication between players, families and coaches has been much faster than during his own recruitment in the 1990s. He has said that being part of Charlie’s decision-making is an opportunity to see the options that his son has gained through his performances.

Tiger Woods supports his children's individual ambitions

Tiger's role in the sporting lives of his children goes beyond sharing tournament experiences or teaching them golf. He publicly backs Sam’s soccer exploits and Charlie’s golf drills, a nod to a philosophy that allows both kids to chart their own course.Charlie will always be in the spotlight due to his father's achievements, including 15 major championships and 82 PGA Tour wins. Yet in collegiate golf, his performances, consistency and development will be judged on their own merits.

Sam’s academic journey, too, hints at the Woods family legacy reaching beyond professional rivalry.Tiger's success does not decide the fate of either child. Sam can keep on building her professional and academic identity, and Charlie gets a chance to develop his competitive game at Florida State. Their differing choices show how a sporting legacy can be inspirational, without the next generation needing to follow the same career path.

So for Tiger Woods, the next chapter isn’t about whether Charlie will play professional golf someday or whether Sam will become more involved in the sport. It’s also about seeing both kids grow into themselves, while still keeping a connection to the game that has defined so much of his life.Charlie prepares for college golf, while Sam heads to Stanford to continue her education; their paths suggest two different ways of continuing the Woods family story. Ultimately, their progress will be defined by their individual choices, their achievements and their interests, not simply their famous surname.
