The Punjab government is preparing legislation to amend the Punjab Arms Ordinance, 1965, and introduce the Punjab Arms Amendment Act, 2026, aiming to tighten penalties for the possession and sale of illegal weapons.
According to sources, the proposed amendments include a new Section 14-A. The government is also considering making illegal-arms cases non-bailable and removing the option of settling such cases through compromise.
Under the proposal, cases involving illegal weapons alongside murder or robbery would be heard by the same court. Pending illegal-arms cases in different courts would also be transferred to a central court.
The proposed changes have not yet been presented as enacted law.
