The United States has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening relations with Niue, marking a milestone in bilateral ties with the appointment of the first U.S. Ambassador to the self-governing Pacific nation.
In a congratulatory statement marking Niue’s 52nd anniversary of self-governance, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the ambassadorial appointment this year built on diplomatic relations established between the two countries in 2023.
Rubio said the United States was committed to deepening its partnership with the people of Niue and expanding cooperation in the years ahead.
He also highlighted cooperation through the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF), particularly efforts to advance regional unity and security.
Rubio noted that the U.S. Deputy Secretary of State had recently announced support to address the ongoing global energy crisis and combat illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing in the Pacific.
“On behalf of the United States of America, I extend my warmest congratulations to the people of Niue as you celebrate the 52nd anniversary of your self-governance,” Rubio said in the statement.
He conveyed his best wishes to Niueans on their Constitution Day and said he looked forward to expanding cooperation between the two countries.
