Motorists have urged the State Highways Department to resume the stalled widening work between Solar and Gatepudhur on the Erode–Karur Road (State Highway 84), citing safety concerns over loose gravel and uneven surfaces.
The five-km stretch is a busy route connecting Erode and Karur, and linking the district with the southern parts of the State. Educational institutions, the Regional Transport Office and the Erode Outer Ring Road junction at Parisal Thurai add to the importance of the road.
The proposal to widen the road into a four-lane carriageway was announced by former Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami in 2019. After the project remained on hold, following a change of government, the DMK government announced a phased implementation plan. Foundation stones were laid on February 20, 2026, for the Solar–Gatepudhur and Solangapalayam–Kangeyampalayam stretches. The two works, estimated at ₹55 crore, are being executed under the Integrated Road Development Scheme for 2026–27.
Though preliminary work, including tree removal, began at a brisk pace, progress slowed before coming to a standstill in June. Culverts have been constructed at several points, but the remaining work has not progressed for nearly four months.
Excavated road margins, loose gravel and the lack of pedestrian space force people to walk close to moving vehicles. Dug-up sections and unfinished culverts pose accident risks, particularly at night. Barricades have narrowed the carriageway at several points, while students and staff of nearby educational institutions face difficulties crossing the road and accessing their destinations.
“The loose gravel scattered along the road is a concern for pedestrians and motorists, especially two-wheeler riders. The danger persists during the day as well as at night,” said C. Senthil of Solar. He urged the authorities to ensure that the contractor resumes work and completes the project without further delay.
Erode MP K.E. Prakash also raised the issue at a recent meeting of the District Development Coordination and Monitoring Committee (DISHA) at the Collectorate, expressing concern over the suspension of road works and calling for their resumption. Sources said the contractor had stopped work because bills remained unsettled. Motorists urged the department to resolve the issue and expedite the project.
