Week 7 of the 2026 regular college football season witnessed an absolute thriller of a game on Saturday as the Miami Hurricanes emerged triumphant over the visiting Florida State Seminoles 43-35 in double overtime.
It was also marred by controversy as a 36-yard touchdown linkup between FSU quarterback Ashton Daniels and wide receiver Micahi Danzy was overturned in the second overtime when Florida State offensive lineman Xavier Chaplin was called for holding.
Florida State was penalized 10 yards, giving the Seminoles a fourth-and-31 at the Miami 46-yard line needing eight points to force a third overtime. FSU coach Mike Norvell criticized the call in aconversation with reporters on Monday.
“You have the holding call, which was an absolute joke. I called and talked to Gary Patterson, the (ACC’s) head of officials. I have not heard his final review from it. I’ve got a lot of respect for the job that everybody has. You go through the course of that game, the same thing happened a few plays earlier that was not called. But in that moment, that play, it’s a shame. It really is,” Norvell said.
“And we had to go convert the two-point play. But for those kids to not be able to finish the game on the field in that moment, it’s really disappointing. A lot of judgment calls in all things, but that was bad. I haven’t gotten the final response from them, but if it’s anything less than what I said, it tells me everything I need to know,” he said.
The win put the Miami Hurricanes (6-0, 4-0 ACC) at the top of the AP Top 25, while the Seminoles (3-4, 1-3) lost their second consecutive game.
Could FSU HC Mike Norvell Get Fired Following 3-4 Start?
Before the start of the 2026 college football season, there were a lot of expectations riding on a program like the Florida State Seminoles. However, the team’s 3-4 mark has raised a lot of eyebrows about FSU coach Mike Norvell’s future in Tallahassee.
Despite a lot of chatter surrounding Norvell’s future, On3’s Pete Nakos reported the program is unlikely to make a decision on his future at the moment. Nakos also highlighted how there has been pressure surrounding defensive coordinator Tony White’s future, with the program ranking 129th in the nation in defense.
With an upcoming open week, the Seminoles will next face Dabo Swinney’s Clemson Tigers in Tallahassee on Oct. 31.
