With the opening of the Indianapolis Colts' general manager position, the minds of fans immediately go toward the franchise's best player: Peyton Manning.
He owns the Colts' major passing records and led them to a Super Bowl title. Manning has remained around the sport since retiring, with the Manning Passing Academy and the analysis he and brother Eli provide on some "Monday Night Football" broadcasts.
He also has a lot of ventures outside football, and it's hard to avoid him on commercial breaks during sporting events.
ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter can't conceive of Manning taking the Colts' GM job.
"I believe that that job is beneath Peyton Manning. You think Tom Brady would come back as a GM or he'd come back as an owner?" Schefter said on a Denver sports radio station.
"His family's in Denver. His kids are there. I don't think he wants to run a day-to-day organization," Schefter said. "As much money as he's made in football, as much money as he's made post football, why is he uprooting his family to go run the day-to-day operations of a football franchise?"
Manning's son Marshall attends school and plays quarterback in Tennessee.
