Liverpool 2-1 Brentford: Iraola Praises Patience as Reds Grind Out Valuable Away Win
Liverpool left west London with three points, and Andoni Iraola knew exactly how much they mattered. A 2-1 win at Brentford does not need dressing up. It was awkward, physical and at times untidy, which is usually what happens at this ground. Liverpool fell behind, had to wait for the game to turn, then took control and finally made it count.
That is the practical reading of it, and it is the correct one.
Keane Lewis-Potter gave Brentford the lead with a well-placed header, and for a while Liverpool looked like a side that might spend the afternoon moving the ball around without enough incision. Then the match changed. Yehor Yarmoliuk was sent off in first-half stoppage time, Brentford had to retreat, and Liverpool were handed the sort of scenario top sides are expected to solve. Eventually, they did.
Victor Munoz equalised just after the hour with a low finish, Alexander Isak then supplied the decisive moment with a sharp touch and clinical strike, and Brentford ended the game with nine men after Vitaly Janelt saw red in added time. Liverpool were better for long stretches once the numerical advantage arrived, though not always as ruthless as they should have been.
Liverpool comeback built on patience
Iraola’s verdict was straightforward. He saw a difficult away fixture, a team that stayed calm and a result with genuine value. His point was simple enough, Brentford at home are a nuisance for anyone and winning there usually requires persistence more than flair. Liverpool eventually showed both.
What pleased him most was the spell before the winner arrived. Liverpool were patient, controlled possession and kept finding useful positions in and around the penalty area. Against 10 men, there is always a temptation to force things, to treat every attack as if it must end in a shot. For the most part, Liverpool resisted that impulse and waited for the right openings.
There was, however, an edge of annoyance in his assessment of the final phase. Once Isak made it 2-1, Liverpool had chances to kill the game on the counter and failed to take them. That kept Brentford alive longer than necessary. Managers do not usually enjoy those final minutes when a match should be over and somehow is still wobbling. Iraola made clear he thought his team handled the extra-man situation well overall, but he also knew they could have finished the job sooner.
Florian Wirtz and Bradley Barcola drive attack
There were two attacking performances that stood out in the manager’s thinking, Florian Wirtz and Bradley Barcola. Both influenced Liverpool’s better moments and both carried threat, even if Barcola left chances behind him. That happens. The important detail is that he kept getting into dangerous positions, which tends to be a more reliable indicator than whether one particular finish hits the net.
Barcola struck the crossbar, missed another opening when trying to chip the goalkeeper and passed up a promising chance when squaring for Lewis Koumas. Wasteful, yes. Irrelevant, no. Liverpool need wide players who can unsettle defenders repeatedly, and Barcola clearly did that.
Wirtz offered something slightly different. In tight spaces, with Brentford defending their box in numbers, Liverpool needed somebody who could work in small pockets, receive under pressure and create in one or two touches. That was his game. When matches become cramped and the margin for error shrinks, players with delicacy and awareness matter more than runners charging into traffic. Iraola also referenced Rio Ngumoha in that category, another player capable of finding solutions where space is scarce.
Munoz deserved his mention too. His goal changed the mood of the afternoon, and his direct running at the right-back gave Liverpool a useful route into the game.
VAR and red-card decisions add to tension
No modern Premier League match passes without a bit of officiating noise, and this one was no exception. Liverpool were awarded a first-half penalty that was later overturned by VAR, and Iraola’s interpretation was familiar in one sense and pointed in another. He accepted that the replay showed Dango Ouattara touching the ball, so the decision to remove the penalty made sense to him. His issue was with consistency, or the lack of it.
His argument was that similar incidents earlier in the season had been left alone because of the threshold for VAR intervention. So, while he was comfortable with no penalty being given in real time, he was less convinced the review process should have become involved at all. This is where managers tend to land these days, less angry at one decision in isolation than at the random feel of how rules are applied from week to week.
On the first red card, he was notably less certain. Rather than plant a flag, he more or less shrugged at the footage and declined to sound convinced either way. That may be the wisest response in a league where everyone has an angle and very few have consistency.
Brentford win gives Iraola what he wanted
This was not a decorative victory. It was a working victory, the sort serious sides collect over a long season. Liverpool had to absorb an early setback, respond to an altered game state and make pressure tell. They did all of that well enough.
The broader point is this, away wins against organised opponents carry weight, particularly when they arrive via a comeback. Brentford made Liverpool work. Liverpool kept going. Iraola got the reaction, the control and the points. In the end, that is the whole story.
