Tesla's 'flying car' Roadster stuns in demo: How high can it fly & what will it cost?

Tesla's long-delayed next-generation Roadster has taken centre stage after a demonstration featuring mid-air manoeuvres, rocket-style thrusters and a landing on its wheels, raising questions about whether flying cars could become a reality.

Unveiled by Elon Musk's electric vehicle company at an event in Texas on October 15, the redesigned sports car was developed in collaboration with SpaceX, Musk's rocket company. Tesla says production is expected to begin in 2028, nearly a decade after the vehicle was first revealed. The demonstration showed the two-seater Roadster driving upside down along a ramp with the help of a suction system before lifting off, rotating in mid-air and landing.

It also performed a manoeuvre in which it jumped over other Tesla vehicles. However, the demonstration does not establish that the Roadster can fly like an aircraft or function as a conventional flying car.Despite the dramatic display, several practical questions remain unanswered, including the vehicle's maximum flight altitude, the distance it can cover in the air, the final production specifications and its confirmed selling price.

How high did fly, and how far did it travel?

Tesla has not publicly confirmed the maximum altitude or horizontal distance covered by the Roadster during the demonstration. The footage showed the vehicle briefly lifting off the ground, rotating in mid-air and returning to the surface, as well as using its thrusters to jump over other vehicles. The demonstration established that the prototype could perform short airborne manoeuvres, but it did not establish the car's ability to sustain flight over long distances. The distinction is important because a vehicle that briefly leaves the ground is not necessarily capable of functioning as a flying car for everyday transportation. Sustained flight would require further information about its lift, stability, flight duration, energy consumption, control systems and safety performance. Tesla has not published independently verified figures for these capabilities.Sharing footage of the demonstration, Tesla wrote, "Real life, baby".

Musk also said: "Turns out the future does have flying cars."

How does Tesla's flying Roadster work?

The Roadster combines electric vehicle technology with a system developed in collaboration with SpaceX. Its demonstration featured two main technologies: a suction system that allows the car to travel upside down along a specially designed ramp, and cold-gas thrusters that help it lift off, rotate and stabilise itself during brief airborne manoeuvres.Tesla has described the suction mechanism as a multi-mode fan and ground-sealing system that draws air from beneath the vehicle, generating downforce. This is intended to keep the car pressed against a surface even when it is upside down. Active aerodynamics and adjustable suspension are also part of the vehicle's performance-focused design. The cold-gas thrusters use pressurised gas to generate thrust, with actuators controlling their operation.

Unlike a conventional car, which relies on tyre grip for acceleration and cornering, the thruster-equipped version is designed to generate additional force for specialised manoeuvres.Tesla said on X: "Every car on the road today is limited by one thing: tire grip Roadster's thruster system generates 4–5x the force the tires can. More force on the same mass means significantly better acceleration – physics does the rest,"Tesla added: "Roadster is a true pilot's car: active aerodynamics, a multi-mode suction system & cold-gas thrusters."These are company claims and have not been independently verified through publicly available performance testing. The demonstration also does not establish how the system would perform under normal road conditions or in adverse weather.

What is the Tesla Roadster's top speed and acceleration?

The Roadster's headline performance claim is acceleration from zero to 60 miles per hour (around 97 kmph) in less than one second. Tesla also says the car can exceed 230 mph (around 370 kmph).

These figures were presented at the unveiling and should be treated as manufacturer claims rather than independently verified production-car performance. The acceleration target would place the Roadster among the most extreme performance vehicles if achieved in a production model. However, its claimed airborne capabilities are separate from its road performance. Tesla has not provided independently verified figures establishing how much the thruster system improves acceleration, how frequently it can be activated or how it affects the vehicle's range. The company has also not established that every version of the Roadster will offer the same capabilities.

What is the price of Tesla's flying Roadster?

Tesla has not announced a confirmed final purchase price for the redesigned Roadster. When the second-generation model was first unveiled in 2017, the company quoted a starting price of $200,000, but that figure has not been confirmed as the price of the latest version.Tesla's reservation page following the unveiling listed different deposits for different versions:

These amounts are reservation deposits, not confirmed final selling prices.

The Rocket version is described as a single-seat vehicle, while the other configurations have different specifications. The full-flight variant is not approved for public-road use, according to reporting by The Information. The final cost could vary depending on the version, equipment and production specifications. Prospective buyers should therefore not interpret the original $200,000 estimate or the reservation deposits as confirmed prices for the redesigned car.

When will Tesla Roadster production begin?

Tesla has set 2028 as its target for beginning production of the redesigned Roadster. The timeline follows years of delays after the company first unveiled the next-generation model in 2017 and initially promised deliveries in 2020.The original Roadster, produced from 2008 to 2012, was Tesla's first electric vehicle and was built using a Lotus Elise chassis. The new model is intended to serve as a high-performance flagship, showcasing the company's engineering capabilities as Tesla expands its focus towards autonomous driving, artificial intelligence and robotics.

Can Tesla's flying Roadster be used on public roads?

The Roadster's demonstration does not mean that its airborne functions are ready for unrestricted public use. Tesla's different configurations have different stated capabilities, and the full-flight Rocket version is described as not approved for public-road use.Regulatory approval, safety standards and the practical requirements of operating a vehicle capable of leaving the ground remain key questions.

A car that uses thrusters to lift off or rotate in mid-air would need to demonstrate that these operations can be carried out safely and predictably, particularly around pedestrians, other vehicles and buildings. There are also questions about how the system would affect occupants, how the vehicle would respond to a mechanical or propulsion failure, and where airborne manoeuvres could legally be performed. Tesla has yet to provide sufficient public information to establish that the Roadster can be used as a conventional flying car.For now, the unveiling demonstrates a prototype capable of brief airborne manoeuvres, not a vehicle proven to replace aircraft or routinely fly between destinations. Its maximum flight height, distance, endurance and final price remain unconfirmed.
