Canadian-born singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell has officially become a United States citizen, marking a significant milestone in a life and career closely intertwined with American music.
As reported by Billboard and the Los Angeles Times, the 82-year-old musician shared news of her naturalisation on October 13, 2026, more than six decades after first arriving in the country.
Mitchell announced the development on social media, posting a photograph of herself holding a small American flag alongside footage from her citizenship ceremony. The announcement brings a new chapter to a journey that began in 1965, when she moved to the United States with her then-husband, musician Chuck Mitchell.
Although the singer has not publicly explained what prompted her decision to pursue citizenship, the milestone gives her the right to vote in US elections, provided she meets the applicable registration and voting requirements.
From Canada to the heart of American music
Born Roberta Joan Anderson on November 7, 1943, in Fort Macleod, Alberta, Mitchell grew up in Saskatchewan before beginning her musical journey across the border. Her early travels took her to Detroit and later New York, before she settled in Southern California.
Los Angeles became a defining setting in her artistic life. By the late 1960s, Mitchell was closely associated with Laurel Canyon, the hillside neighbourhood that became a gathering place for influential musicians and songwriters of the era. She shared creative connections with artists including David Crosby and Graham Nash, while developing a distinctive musical identity that blended folk, jazz, pop and deeply personal storytelling.
Her move to the United States helped place her at the centre of a changing music scene, but her influence would eventually extend far beyond any one city or genre.
An enduring legacy in music
Across a career spanning several decades, Mitchell has earned recognition for her songwriting, unconventional musical arrangements and willingness to explore intimate subjects through her work. Her catalogue includes celebrated songs such as Big Yellow Taxi, Both Sides, Now, River and A Case of You.
Her 1971 album Blue remains one of her most acclaimed recordings, widely admired for its emotional candour and sparse, expressive arrangements.Another major release, Court and Spark (1974), brought her considerable commercial success, reaching No. 2 on the Billboard 200 chart. Her song Help Me, from the same album, peaked at No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100. Mitchell’s contributions have also been recognised through numerous honours, including 11 Grammy Awards.
Her influence can be heard across generations of musicians who have drawn inspiration from her lyrical precision, melodic experimentation and refusal to remain within conventional boundaries.
A new chapter after decades in the US
Mitchell’s relationship with American politics has occasionally entered the public conversation. During a 2024 performance at the Hollywood Bowl, she criticised then-presidential candidate Donald Trump and highlighted the limitations of her status as a Canadian citizen when it came to participating in US elections.
Her new citizenship marks a change in that position, giving her the opportunity to take part in the country’s electoral process as an eligible voter. For an artist whose work has become deeply embedded in American cultural history, the development is a personal milestone as well as a notable moment in her long relationship with the country. More than 60 years after arriving from Canada, Mitchell has formally made the United States her adopted home.
