Air Canada has disclosed that it'll be returning to a US city that last saw the airline a quarter of a century ago. In April 2027, the Star Alliance member will lift off from its busiest hub of
Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) to Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport (SDF). Enilria shows that flights were last available in 2002.
SDF is renowned for freight activity, including internationally, with UPS. However, the airport does not currently have any international passenger operations. Cirium Diio shows that they were last available with Bahamasair and Vision Airlines in 2012. As such, Air Canada's return is all the more notable.
Air Canada From Toronto To Louisville
The revelation that Air Canada is returning to SDF was first publicized by Enilria, which writes about network changes and data analysis, on X, with the route now bookable. The first departure is set for Wednesday, April 28, 2027. A four-weekly operation by Jazz Aviation's 76-seat CRJ900s for Air Canada Express will be available, with the following schedule.

Covering 431 nautical miles (798 km) each way, it will be Air Canada's new 14th-shortest US route from YYZ next May. In ascending order, flights will cover shorter distances than services to Cleveland, Detroit, Pittsburgh, Columbus, Washington Dulles, Newark, Philadelphia, New York LaGuardia Airport (LGA), Washington National, Cincinnati, Chicago O'Hare, Indianapolis, and Boston. New York JFK would have featured, but Air Canada recently stopped flying there.

A Deeper Look At Toronto To Louisville
Local demand between YYZ and SDF is predictably modest. Booking data shows that 16,300 round-trip passengers flew indirectly in 2025, primarily via Chicago, Detroit, and Atlanta. This is despite the ongoing challenges between the US and Canada, which have reduced total traffic. Air Canada's nonstop flights will grow this volume, but clearly nowhere near as much as for leisure-driven markets or those with relatively low fares.
The same source shows that the average fare for YYZ-SDF, across all airlines, passengers, and cabins, was US$302 one-way (excluding taxes, add-ons, and any fuel surcharge). In contrast, it was only $194 from LGA. As a stark comparison, the average fare from YYZ to
Dublin Airport (DUB) was just US$280 each way, driven by the leisure nature of the market, with fairly low premium traffic, and four airlines flying nonstop (Aer Lingus, Air Canada, Air Transat, and WestJet).
Despite only 608 weekly round-trip seats, connectivity via YYZ will be important for Air Canada's SDF route. The figure above, which is from OAG for a week next May, shows that the 2:00 PM period has the airline's second-largest number of departures to the US. However, it is too early for many of Air Canada's long-haul arrivals from Asia and Europe, although it is fine for SDF's top long-haul market, London.
215 Daily Departures To The US Next May
Let's fast-forward to May 2027 for a snapshot of Air Canada activity. While the schedule is not finalized yet, the latest information shows that the nation's largest operator (and its different units) plans 215 daily departures to the US. Flights will go from eight Canadian airports, but obviously mainly YYZ (103 weekly departures). It is distantly followed by Montréal-Trudeau International Airport (YUL; 62) and Vancouver International Airport (YVR; 35).
The addition of SDF means that 44 US airports will be served. They'll have a median of four daily departures from Canada, with 31 of them having a minimum of three daily services. This includes the likes of Cleveland, Pittsburgh, and St. Louis, with the airline flying twice daily from YYZ and daily from YUL. SDF will be among only four places to have a sub-daily offering in the examined period, alongside Fort Myers, New Orleans, and San Antonio.
