TURA, Oct 15: Alleging discrepancies in scholarship disbursements, Tura MDC Bernard Marak has called on the state government to explain why several ST students received less than the amount sought under the Umbrella Scholarship scheme, while others were denied assistance despite being eligible.
“The complaints have emerged despite the Chief Minister’s announcement regarding the release of scholarships. Some students from economically disadvantaged families have also alleged that their applications were rejected, leaving them struggling to meet admission fees, tuition costs and other educational expenses,” stated Marak in a press communiqué.
According to the MDC, students and their families have been struggling with the non-release of funds, which has added to their financial burden and forced some to struggle with college dues and seek alternative means to continue their education.
“We urge the state authorities to clarify the criteria for approving and rejecting applications, explain discrepancies between the amounts sought and disbursed, and provide reasons for rejected applications,” Marak said.
Marak called for the publication of details of approved, rejected and pending applications, verification of complaints regarding short payments, and the release of all outstanding dues to eligible students without further delay.
“Students have stressed that scholarship announcements must translate into adequate and timely financial assistance, particularly for those from economically weaker backgrounds who depend on the scheme to pursue their education,” the Tura MDC stressed.
