Hitler Mussolini wins election for left wing party

A politician named Hitler Mussolini has won a mayoral election representing a party of the centre left. And in an extraordinary coincidence, this is not the first time an election in Peru has involved names associated with some of history’s most controversial political figures.

Politics can produce some extraordinary headlines, but this one sounds almost too strange to be true.

Hitler Mussolini Simeón Flores, 45, has won a local election in the Peruvian Andes, carrying the names of two of the twentieth century’s most notorious dictators.

The unusual result has attracted international attention, particularly because the newly elected mayor stood for the centre left party Ahora Nación, defeating a rival from the political right.

Hitler Mussolini wins by just 25 votes

The newly elected mayor secured 229 votes, representing approximately 34.5 per cent of the valid ballots cast, in the small district of Queropalca, in Peru’s Huánuco region.

His closest rival, Gaspar Osorio, representing the right wing Renovación Popular party, received 204 votes.

That left Hitler Mussolini celebrating victory by just 25 votes.

The election was held on October 4, with the new mayor due to take office on January 1, 2027.

Peru’s National Office of Electoral Processes is responsible for organising elections and processing electoral results.

But there is another unexpected detail to this political story.

Before joining Ahora Nación, Simeón Flores had belonged to Fuerza Popular, the right wing party associated with former presidential candidate Keiko Fujimori.

He switched political allegiances in 2025.

His political journey from one party to another adds another twist to an already unusual electoral victory.

And then there was Hitler versus Lenin

If that sounds like an extraordinary coincidence, Peru has an even stranger electoral story in its recent history.

Back in 2018, a politician named Hitler Guesclin Alba Sánchez was running for mayor of Yúngar, another small district in the Peruvian Andes.

His candidacy was challenged by a man named Lennin Vladimir Rodríguez Valverde.

Yes, Hitler and Lenin were involved in the same political controversy.

Rodríguez Valverde attempted to prevent Hitler Alba from standing, but the challenge was rejected by the electoral authorities.

Hitler Alba went on to win the mayoral election with approximately 47.7 per cent of the vote.

Although Lennin Vladimir was not the candidate Hitler defeated at the ballot box, the extraordinary confrontation attracted international media attention.

The episode was reported by Peru’s official state news agency, Andina, which covered Hitler Alba’s return to power.

The man who called himself the good Hitler

The 2018 election produced another unforgettable moment when Hitler Alba described himself as the good Hitler.

He explained that his father had chosen his name without understanding its historical significance.

He also made clear that he rejected the ideology of Adolf Hitler.

His campaign attracted attention far beyond the small municipality he hoped to govern, with international newspapers reporting on the extraordinary political naming coincidence.

Now, eight years later, another Peruvian politician has managed to surpass even that headline.

This time, the candidate carries the names Hitler and Mussolini together.

Two names with very different political histories

The unusual combination has attracted attention because Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini led authoritarian regimes that profoundly shaped twentieth century European history.

Hitler led Germany’s National Socialist German Workers’ Party, commonly known as the Nazi Party. Despite the inclusion of socialism in its name, Nazism is generally classified by historians as an extreme right wing ideology, characterised by racial nationalism, dictatorship and violent opposition to Marxism and political pluralism.

Mussolini’s political journey followed a different path. He began as a socialist activist and newspaper editor before breaking with the socialist movement and developing Italian fascism.

Both regimes ultimately suppressed political opposition and established dictatorships.

However, sharing their names does not establish any ideological connection between the historical leaders and the newly elected Peruvian mayor.

There is no evidence that Hitler Mussolini Simeón Flores supports the beliefs of either dictator.

Why do these unusual names appear in Peru?

For European readers, the idea of naming a child Hitler or Mussolini might seem almost unimaginable.

But unusual names inspired by historical figures, celebrities and fictional characters are not unheard of in parts of Latin America.

According to figures cited by Spanish newspaper El País in its coverage of the election, nearly 4,000 people in Peru were registered with the name Hitler in 2023.

Other names inspired by famous personalities, including footballers and film characters, have also appeared in national registration records.

Importantly, a person’s name does not necessarily reflect their political views.

In the case of Hitler Mussolini Simeón Flores, the unusual historical associations have made a relatively small municipal election a subject of international interest.

When politics becomes stranger than fiction

Imagine opening your local newspaper to discover that Hitler Mussolini had won an election for a party of the centre left.

Then imagine discovering that, eight years earlier, another Hitler had survived a political challenge from a man called Lenin.

Both events genuinely happened and both took place in Peru.

Moreover, both produced headlines that would sound perfectly at home in a political satire.

The latest election demonstrates how an unusual name can turn a local political contest into an international talking point.

For the residents of Queropalca, however, the result is about something considerably more practical: choosing the person who will run their municipality.

Whatever his political achievements turn out to be, Hitler Mussolini Simeón Flores is unlikely to have much difficulty getting people to remember his name.
