The season is still in its infancy, but there’s been some cause for concern at Bayern Munich since the German Rekordmeister has drawn two straight matches since returning from the international break. A shocking 3-3 draw in Norway against Viking FK in the Champions League followed a frustrating 2-2 draw at Augsburg in the Bundesliga, and Vincent Kompany made a point of saying his side needs to make far fewer mistakes to avoid dropping points in a similar fashion moving forward.
New signings Nathaniel Brown and Ismael Saibari have both made their presence felt in the squad thus far, having been the only two arrivals of the summer transfer window. Brown has tallied two goals from a total of eight appearances across all competitions, while Saibari has tallied two goals and two assists from nine appearances. The pair of new Bayern players might not be setting the world on fire just yet, but they’ve improved what is already an elite, star-studded squad that nearly went the distance across all three fronts last season.
In addition to some of the individual mistakes Bayern has made in matches where they’ve dropped points, a handful of factors have not gone in Kompany’s favor. Luis Díaz took a while to break his goal drought, Jamal Musiala has experienced multiple health and injury setbacks, Michael Olise will now miss the Arsenal Champions League clash due to his red card against Viking FK, Lennart Karl missed the beginning of the season through injury, Serge Gnabry missed the start of the campaign through injury, and now Manuel Neuer is dealing with fitness problems. At times, a deep squad can get rather thin, especially with the number of English weeks on the horizon.
Despite some of the hits the squad has taken so far this season, board member for sport Max Eberl recently said that he feels Bayern does not need to make any signings this winter in the January transfer window.
“We’re totally happy with the squad, totally happy with the players. I see zero reason why we should act in January. We have players who are currently at their top level, and other players who haven’t reached their top level yet. When everyone reaches their top level and we go on a run, then I don’t see why we should act,” he told Sky Sport journalist Kerry Hau ahead of the Bundesliga clash against RB Leipzig (via@iMiaSanMia).
Of course, things could change out of necessity if there are serious or mounting injury problems in the squad come the winter break, but the club’s top priority right now off the pitch is getting the contract extensions for both Harry Kane and Olise sorted and finalized.
