Across 12 years, five seasons, and 30 episodes, HBO's True Detective has delivered some of the best police procedural telly on the box — and key to the anthology series' continued to success has been the strength of each season's central cop pairings. From Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson in Season 1 through to Jodie Foster and Kali Reis in Night Country, the show has never lacked for star power at any point in its run. And now HBO has officially confirmed True Detective Season 5's powerhouse pairing: actual Nicolas Cage and actual Antonio Banderas. Check out the announcement below;
Hailing from True Detective: Night Country showrunner Issa López, the latest season of HBO's critically acclaimed anthology series is set to relocate the investigative work to Jamaica Bay, New York. And while we don't yet know what the case is going to be, who else will star alongside Cage and Banderas, or when we can even expect the fifth instalment of TD to hit our screens, we do know a couple of things for certain. Firstly, if not character specifics then we do at least have names for our new cop pairing: Banderas is set to star as Rai García while Cage is on to play the role of Henry Logan. And secondly, we also know that filming isn't too far off, with the current plan being for shooting to start in 2027.
While Banderas doesn't bring a whole heap of experience playing true detectives to his latest assignment, Cage on the other hand is a bit of a pro at this point, having starred as private eye Ben Reilly in Spider-Noir already this year and previously notably flexed his investigative chops — for better and worse — in Bad Lieutenant, Snake Eyes, and that remake of The Wicker Man, too. For now however, all we really need to know is that we're getting a Banderas x Cage x López team-up. A killer combo, we can surely all agree.
